WOLFEBORO, N.H. (AP) — A town police commissioner has resigned after he admitted using a racial slur to describe President Barack Obama, an official said Monday.

Robert Copeland, 82, resigned Sunday night from the post to which he was re-elected in March, Board of Selectmen Chair Linda Murray said, putting to rest a controversy that drew national attention and sparked impassioned debate in this resort town of 6,300 on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee.

"The town is pleased," Murray said Monday. "This gives us the opportunity to move on. We are a very accepting community that really takes care of each other."

Copeland has not returned several calls seeking comment.

Not sure how you could see this coming, since most of what you wrote is incorrect. He’s not a sheriff, he’s one of three elected police commissioners for the town. Perhaps the position is a paid one, but it isn’t a “job” that one would retire from. Perhaps he did decide “screw it” and finally resign after resisting calls to do so. But perhaps he shouldn’t have been calling the president a “f***ing n****r” in the middle of a restaurant. I highly doubt the town will fall down as a result of his absence from the public scene. In fact, I think the town’s response showed that its residents are quite a bit less ignorant than this one jerk might have led others to believe.

Wolfboro, NH is a fairly affluent lakeside community in north central NH. However, there is a huge disparity between the lake front houses, like Romney’s, and people that live in a trailer with no view of the lake. There are a lot of rich retirees from down state and other northeast states. The whole of NH only has 1% black folks, 5% Hispanic and about 3-4% Asian. The rest are a bunch of WASP’s like me(except I grew up catholic).

You’ll have to forgive me if I have zero sympathy for people who run around calling others “nigger”.

Instead of putting the blame where it belongs on this one commissioner the media and the left will use this as a context to condemn the entire Republican Party. Don’t doubt that for a second.

Linda Murray should visit any bar at an international airport where American businessmen are drinking while waiting for their next plane connection.

Perhaps I should not have mentioned it — it may become a serious crime for which they can land in jail upon returning to the States.

As Rush says, words mean things...and when you say certain words, it portrays a bigotry and prejudice that is inappropriate for one overseeing how laws are enforced.

George Orwell’s 1984 was right on target...
One of Orwell’s most important messages in 1984 is that language is of central importance to human thought because it structures and limits the ideas that individuals are capable of formulating and expressing. If control of language were centralized in a political agency, Orwell proposes, such an agency could possibly alter the very structure of language to make it impossible to even conceive of disobedient or rebellious thoughts, because there would be no words with which to think them. This idea manifests itself in the language of Newspeak, which the Party has introduced to replace English. The Party is constantly refining and perfecting Newspeak, with the ultimate goal that no one will be capable of conceptualizing anything that might question the Party’s absolute power. The ever vigilant eyes of Big Brother are the Thought Police. The principles of doublethink. The best explanation of doublethink are examples provided by slogans. These are: WAR IS PEACE; SLAVERY IS FREEDOM; and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

So in your mind, and Copeland's phrasing, would the best Orwellian comparison be F*CKING N*GGER IS FREEDOM? Or does something catchy like IGNORANCE IS F*CKING N*GGER work better?

Otherwise, I'm not sure where Newspeak comes into the issue, since it is pretty clear what Copeland meant with the language that he used.

What you say may be true but those are not the sentiments expressed by the Chair, which is what I responded to. Instead, she was clearly reacting to outside opinions and/or pressures and trotted out the hoariest of feel-good cliches.

Amazing that the moderators are OK with FR being the place where the old coot calling people “nigger” is the victim.

He was not the most diplomatic fellow, for sure. Perhaps this was the best outcome before the riled up citizens went into overdrive about this one incident.
