Hahaha!!! I love those old steam tractors. We have a yearly festival down here I just love to go to. The sounds, the smells, it’s just some good down-to-earth machinery.

This was an unfair contest. The angle of the tow bar is so extreme that it pulled the John Deer’s rear end up off the ground enough to cause it to loose an enormous amount of traction.

Turns out John Deers make good plows. Who’d have thought? Odd though, I’d think that a steam engine would smoke more than a modern JD rather than less.

Nonetheless, I still love the old steam-powered technology.

What I like about this is that it reminds us just how complicated the real world is.

"Everything Should Be Made as Simple as Possible, But Not Simpler", certainly applies to any prediction concerning this contest.

This particular demonstration wasn’t fair, due to the issues with the bar angle, the relative weights of the machines, etc. but fixing all that wouldn’t change the result.
Steam engines have all their torque available at 0 rpm. Steam locomotives always could accelerate a train from 0 no diesel could. That is why modern trains have electric motors to provide traction and the diesels just provide power to the motors.

Both need the same tires and loaded with same weight with something to mitigate the tow bar angle....

This would be a great video to show in junior high science when explaining horsepower and torque - and their differences.

That is a small John Deere tractor; a compact class, with a high gear ratio. Hook that steamer up to a large field JD, 400 hp in low gear and front wheel assist, and the JD will drag it around the track, hands down.
