IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. —

Iredell County deputies said they arrested a man they say sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl he met online.

Officers said a mother found Jarred Workman, 27, of Albemarle, hiding in her daughter's bedroom closet Friday.

Workman made his first appearance in court Tuesday morning.

People inside the courtroom gasped at the charges Jared Workman is facing --16 counts of first-degree statutory rape.

If convicted on all of them, he could serve life in prison without parole.

Life works for me. A bullet would be better.

I do not care if it was consensual.

She is responsible in a child way.
The man is responsible in an adult way.
There is a huge difference between the two.

He’s not a good guy (here comes the but), but statutory rape is not, as Whoopi would say, rape, rape.

I agree however I just don’t know which is worse.

She let him in.

or

He actually has no place to live other than her closet?

Think about it.

>> Police said the man had moved into the closet and was living there April 27 through May 2. The parents said they had no idea.

What? There’s more to this story.

“She is responsible in a child way.”

No she is responsible in a Planned Parenthood induced way. Seriously.

Stupid man. All he needed was a sex change and a teaching degree and he would be sentenced to time served in the closet

Hopefully, I do not need a sarcasm tag.

There are some kids that can probably drink responsibly at 11 and there are others that will never be able to drink responsibly regardless of age.

Still it's good to set an age limit for practical reasons.

I think it makes even more sense in case of rape. A man should know that below a certain age no amount of consent counts as consent.

The only guys that should get some clemency are those who genuinely believed that a particular girl was of age even though she turned out to be younger. But they'd better have good evidence to support this.

Exodus 22

16 And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.

17 If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

Deuteronomy 22

28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;

29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

A shekel was between 9 and 17 grams, depending on the period. If 17 grams, this would be 850 grams of silver, or at today's spot price, $527.00

“15 will get you 20” must not be a common euphemism to this generation.

The girl is not without blame here.

Sixteen counts of rape - and he was in the house for only seven days. Yes, I think she may have been a willing participant.

He traveled two counties from Stanly to Iredell. Did he drive to McDonalds for meals, or did the girl serve him Mom’s home cooking? Bizarre & creepy.

I would think it should be converted based on what 50 shekels of silver could purchase in those days.

For example, I’ve found a chart that shows a shekel as 4 days wages in those days. That would be 200 days wages. Divide that by 5 days per week, that would be 40 weeks wages.

Would a typical weeks’ work today be worth $1,000, or $52k per year (or the average workman) ? At least, IMHO.

Maybe it’s better to take into account they used to work 6 days a week. So 4 days wages is 2/3 of a week. So how many weeks work is 50 shekels ? 50 * 2/3, or 33 1/3 weeks.

IMHO, that’s sounding more in the ballpark for such a payment; around $40k to $50k. Maybe $33k ?

I like Matthew Henry’s commentary on the Exodus verse:

“Here is, I. A law that he who debauched a young woman should be obliged to marry her, Exod. 22:16, 17. If she was betrothed to another, it was death to debauch her (Deut. 22:23, 24); but the law here mentioned respects her as single. But, if the father refused her to him, he was to give satisfaction in money for the injury and disgrace he had done her. This law puts an honour upon marriage and shows likewise how improper a thing it is that children should marry without their parents’ consent: even here, where the divine law appointed the marriage, both as a punishment to him that had done wrong and a recompence to her that had suffered wrong, yet there was an express reservation for the father’s power; if he denied his consent, it must be no marriage.”

and on the Deuteronomy verse:

“V. If a damsel not betrothed were thus abused by violence, he that abused her should be fined, the father should have the fine, and, if he and the damsel did consent, he should be bound to marry her, and never to divorce her, how much soever she was below him, and how unpleasing soever she might afterwards be to him, as Tamar was to Amnon after he had forced her, Deut. 22:28, 29. This was to deter men from such vicious practices, which it is a shame that we are necessitated to read and write of.”
