CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) – A Camden County Police Lieutenant has been removed from duty after he was accused of masturbating inside of a Starbucks in Cherry Hill.
Lt. Benito Gonzalez Junior has been charged with a disorderly persons lewdness offense.
An employee from a store on Route 70 reported the incident to authorities on May 7.
Officials say the officer was not on duty at the time.
Police have launched a criminal and internal investigation and the department says they are “troubled” by the allegations.

In his defense Gonzalez stated that he was off duty at the time and the weapon was of a very small caliber and incapable of firing.

“According to the police report, he was in the Starbucks on Route 70 when he pulled down his shorts to expose his genitals and masturbated while seated at a table.
Gonzalez allegedly committed the act, “knowing or reasonably expecting that the act was likely to be observed by a nonconsenting person who would be affronted or alarmed ...,” according to the report.”
