Geography bee win fulfills teen's longtime dream

Akhil Rekulapelli has his life mapped out. The 13-year-old wants to attend Stanford University and become a doctor, probably a surgeon.

But he knows it will be a while before he achieves anything as satisfying as his victory Wednesday in the National Geographic Bee, which came after a close call last year and a lifelong interest in nations, cities, cultures and history.

Good for the winner and other contestants. /src on/The contest is racist because I did not notice members of certain disadvantaged groups. Just as with Debating Contests the rules and questions need to be changed to accommodate the different interests, backgrounds, and thinking patterns of minority groups. These high achieving students need to check their privilege. /src off/

The winning scholarship was doubled from last year thanks to a donation from "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek, who stepped down a year ago as host of the bee. Broadcast journalist Soledad O'Brien hosted this year.

Kudos to Mr. Trebek for his generous donation!

Too bad the dumbest of the dumb was selected to host it this year. Did she provide questions such as "Which is the most equitable and fair nation on earth? Cuba, North Korea or the old Soviet Union?"
