Gun laws in CA are ridiculous even if you have CC gun must be in the
trunk of your car ect.,ect., ect., next to impossible to get a CC in CA.

Whats wrong with walking around with a knife? In this case it seemed to work quite well. And I personally think a knife would work better on an attacking dog than a gun. It would be easy to miss a small, fast dog with a gun.
