On Monday, the Washington Post film critic Ann Hornaday published an op-ed drawing a connection between UCSB shooter Elliot Rodger and "the entertainment industry he grew up in." (The 22-year-old's father, Peter Rodger, worked as an assistant director on The Hunger Games.) Of Rodger's chilling video confession, Hornaday wrote, "With his florid rhetoric of self-pity, aggression and awkwardly forced 'evil laugh,' Rodger resembled a noxious cross between Christian Bale's slick sociopath in 'American Psycho,' the thwarted womanizer in James Toback’s 'The Pick-Up Artist' and every Bond villain in the canon." But she also brought up the ostensibly harmless characters found in comedies aimed at Rodger's demographic (young, straight, white males).
For generations, mass entertainment has been overwhelmingly controlled by white men, whose escapist fantasies so often revolve around vigilantism and sexual wish-fulfillment (often, if not always, featuring a steady through-line of casual misogyny). Rodger’s rampage may be a function of his own profound distress, but it also shows how a sexist movie monoculture can be toxic for women and men alike.
How many students watch outsized frat-boy fantasies like 'Neighbors' and feel, as Rodger did, unjustly shut out of college life that should be full of 'sex and fun and pleasure'? How many men, raised on a steady diet of Judd Apatow comedies in which the shlubby arrested adolescent always gets the girl, find that those happy endings constantly elude them and conclude, 'It’s not fair'?
Unsurprisingly, Apatow and Neighbors star Seth Rogen were unhappy to find themselves linked to the deaths of six college students, and they took to Twitter to criticize Hornaday:
So far, Hornaday has yet to respond to Rogen and Apatow's criticisms.
Can't we like, pass a law to ban or regulate something and stuff?

I have yet to see an intelligent take on this atrocity, from either side of the political spectrum. And I don’t have one myself, other than “mental illness is bad and we don’t do a good job in this country handling these extreme cases” which is not very helpful as a policy recommendation

Which is it Hollywood? You make movies that impact people, carry “important” messages, form public opinion OR, when it hits the fan, “our movies are just entertainment; we don't have any responsibility.”
What people are NOT pointing out is that all three sets of perps... of Columbine, Connecticut, and UCSB, ALL of them were conditioned, desensitized, infantilized, and trained watching videos made by EA and other evil, publicly traded companies.
Sure, these public companies have First Amendment rights. But they don't care too much about the implied responsibilities.
In my opinion, a very serious case for causation could be made in court in a civil suit. These video games breed these creeps as effectively as United Airlines uses similar technology to train pilots.
But mostly, I and anyone with any education and upbringing are terminally weary of the horrible feculent Hollywood CrapCulture...extending to our news, movies, TV shows, video games, music. These massacres are just what happens when you immerse infantile atheistic, turd-like people in the sick Hollywood leftist CrapCulture for years and years.

I have no problem with labeling this creep a misogynist. He truly fit the definition. I do have a real problem with feminists who use this label for all men.

He may very well be a left-wing Canadian doofus who appears in bad movies. But blaming Seth Rogan for a lunatic’s mass murder does seem quite unfair.
Seems to me he wasn’t exclusively a misogynist. He seemed to hate a lot of people, including the young men who “scored” sex with the girls. He was a narcissist who thought he was entitled to whatever he wanted, and thought he was better than most people.
Plenty of hate there, that’s for sure.

Just because his parents and the media say he was mentally ill doesn’t make it so.
In his own words, therapy was useless in a “cruel and unjust world.” And he was right about the world being cruel and unjust. It is. Everybody has to find a way to live with that.
He refused to, just like he refused to work a custodial job, walking off after one day, because he was a self-described “intellectual” and the job was beneath him. That isn’t mental illness, either. That’s a grandiose view of yourself and your place in the universe.
He thought he was smarter than all the therapists. He didn’t know God. So there was no helping him. He decided to take revenge by throwing a childish temper tantrum against the “cruel and unjust” world and his place in it. And he used knives and guns and his car — anything within reach, like a kid who throws himself on the floor and breaks things. That’s not mental illness. That’s childishness.
If he was sick, he’s not responsible. Do you really want to let him and all the narcissistic, eternally childish, hateful bastards like him, off the hook for his choices and actions?
I think you can be mentally ill and still be held criminally responsible for your actions. Not guilty by reason of insanity should really be reserved for people who truly are so crazy they actually don’t know that they are hurting people.
