Anyone have a lawyer or business they can recommend for fighting IRS levies and abuse? Lots show up on searches, but want FReeper input. Thanks!
Oh, should have mentioned: I am in Texas.
What is this IRS you speak of?
My CPA is MIA.
Has levy occurred or threat? What is letter code in top right hand corner?
Levy. Small one but still a pain in my azz.
Wish I could help - the one we used is in Delaware. So sorry.
If I were you I would work out a payment plan. Have they levied your wages yet? Good thing you don’t live in California or you would have a hungry bear at your door in addition to the IRS.
If they are seizing your bank account etc. you have let things go too far. If your CPA is not helping, then fire him. He should have gotten a limited POA to handle your tax problems and then done so.
The worst thing you can do is nothing. Contact the person in the IRS who is handling your account and try to work out a payment agreement. If it has gone to a Revenue Officer for collection, it is actually easier to deal with them than an office collection person.
Whatever you do, contact them and let them know if you can’t afford to pay. If you can afford to pay, then you probably will have to do so.
Bank or paycheck? Is debt satisfied? What type of tax, year incurred? Is amount less than 10k, less than25k or more than 50k?
Rush recommends one on the air. Maybe they advertise on his website...
Contact your state’s Bar Association and find out if they have a Tax Specialist program (where they take a test and are qualified to use the Specialist designation). Many of those attorneys will have an LL.M. (Master of Laws - advanced degree) in tax law. Alternatively, find out who does “tax controversy” work. If your CPA doesn’t know anyone, you could also check with a local Enrolled Agent — sometimes Enrolled Agents are also paralegals or attorneys in tax law firms. It’s a fairly tight circle — usually everybody knows everybody else and can make recommendations. Good luck.
I can tell you that i used one of those tax reslution companies. Charged 4000 dollars. Only help was they stopped garnishment and arranged payments. That was it. One co. Wanted 8000.
Find an experienced Enrolled Agent that has represented clients with similar IRS issues.
Hire an ex-IRS guy. On the advice of my regular business attorney I went to an old guy who had retired from the IRS and he drove them crazy with his tactics.
Remember they get bonuses based on their collections and the time factor is important to them. He even talker real slow at meetings and I could tell how it bugged them.
If your representative drags out the audit or whatever, they tend to lose interest and go for the low-hanging fruit.
I got a IRS got ya letter from Austin TX.
Turned out someone at the IRS manually edited my file to make it look like I missed a pre-pay.
I had the canceled check.
Funny thing is it happened 3 weeks after I sent a donation to Ted Cruz.
