MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) - Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are donating $120 million to public schools in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The gift, which the couple discussed in an exclusive interview with the Associated Press, will be spread over the next five years. It is the biggest allocation to date of the $1.1 billion in Facebook stock the couple pledged last year to the nonprofit Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

"Education is incredibly expensive and this is a drop in the bucket. What we are trying to do is catalyze change by exploring and promoting the development of new interventions and new models," Chan said in an interview Thursday at Facebook's Menlo Park, California, headquarters.

couldn’t he find some poor Appalachen schools?..or schools in Mississippi?.....but the San Fran area?...

Yep. And I wonder how much is going to Oakland? We’ll need more details to know if Mark is racist or a bigot.

Goody. More money for child molesting officials and knife-wielding “educators”.

It would be better spent by just throwing it out the window

The worst schools in the Bay Area (Oakland, East Palo Alto) are probably worse that the worst schools in west virginia or Mississippi - life threateningly worse.

Like him or not (and I definitely don’t), it’s sad to see someone who worked so hard for what he had p*** it away.

Since we obviously have a drunken sailor here, can we just call FR a “school district” and get 100 million too?

FR is much more educational than any school district, therefor they will say we don’t need the money. Only bad schools get more cash, so all public schools become bad.

They mean well, but the money will be wasted. Instead, they should have funded a start-up company to create a complete, accredited, K-12 programmed instruction course for iOS and Android.

Genuine educational improvements are going to require the unschooling of normal children in large numbers. Give them a way to bypass the dead Socialist Indoctrination Centers and the next Renaissance will begin.

I think Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are just showboating.

They could do something useful like setting up tutoring centers to help struggling kids. The crnters would provide one on one help for qualified kids.

One of the best charities I have been associated with are the Scottish Rites Speech and Language Clinics.

They provide free speech therapy to qualified kids for 18 months. Both of my daughters qualified. It got my daughters on the right track. I learned so much and also knew the public school system was off base. The public school said one of my daughters was a select mute and choosing not to talk. The Scottish Rite Clinic said it was apraxia of speech. They encouraged me to get an MRI. They gave me websites about it. My daughter still needed speech therapy after 18 months, but she was on the right tract.

I think providing tutoring for dyslexics in California would be especially useful because California schools don’t even test for dsylexia. For the money Zuckerberg is gving he could set up centers that would test and tutor dyslexics.

“Gift” is a noun, not a verb. The correct word is “give.”

In related news, California school officials have announced the need for a tax increase to plug the $120,000,000 budget shortfall for the year after.

He could have sponsored 1000 to 2000 home-school families. Now THAT would produce results!
