Many schools ‘round here, have eliminated home ec and shop classes. I for one think teens should know how to mend, sew on a button, and use a hammer and nail, cook a meal from scratch.

FWIW, many vo-ag schools have closed their doors....under the premise that *all* kids should go to college. Dang shame!

Since our kids were young enough to learn, we taught them all those skills and then some. I just can’t understand parents that turn their kids loose on the world with no skills. Really handicaps them.

When I observed the *quality* [inability to cook, sew, use simple tools, do laundry, iron, clean a toilet bowl] of the young ladies my 3 boys were bringing home when they were dating....I made sure the boys acquired above mentioned skills, [plus shoot, drive in unusual conditions, change a flat tire, split a log, sharpen a knife]....and have been told they were *quite the catch*.

His autobiography is impressive, but it shows just how plain the living was at that time and yet people still cheated, tricked, loved, and helped one another just like today.

I worry that we suffer nostalgia for an age that fond memories makes great than it really was. Crockett sounds like when it comes to hunting he has ADD. The Creek War he fights in is a good tale with plenty of cowardice and stupidity, but little actual fighting. They did know their neighbors and were ready to help, but needed it as well. I suspect that it was mutual risk insurance, more than Christian piety driving that.

It’s short and I hope you enjoy it. I did. Ping me when you’ve finished as I’d love to hear your insights.

It is well documented that British soldiers delighted in America’s Boston prostitutes. They were focused, fast and affordable. Sadly, there isn’t a sinless age, but there is an Atonement and a Resurrection. Hope to see you there. ;-]

Yep, government schooling has been a disaster. Just knowing how to sew a button gives one a sense of control and success that throwing it away and buying new just cannot give, particularly when the item is especially preferred.

Your post reminds me of this:

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, con a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
- Robert Heinlein

Other than die gallantly and butcher a hog, I’ve done them all.

I had heard that too. Did government grant marriage licenses then as well?

***Did government grant marriage licenses then as well?***

I don’t believe they did. From an article I read long before the Internet.

There was some Militia leader back in the early 1800s whose men had gotten whipped by the Indians. So he went into Politics.

He started demanding people start paying for getting married so started issuing licenses. It stood up in court so all now issue such licenses.

My knowledge of my "moral" great grandparents was the result of years of genealogy research.
While investigating, I discovered 19th Century NYC was full of families with many children still living home into their 30s; an unbelievable infant mortality rate; rampant diseases like TB, influenza and pneumonia; adult life spans barely reaching 50; and living environments so bad, we wouldn't treat animals that way today.
As you said - what good old days?
