Steamy conditions at Game 1 of Heat-Spurs NBA Finals a bizarre, embarrassing twist
Miami Herald ^ | 6/6/14 | Greg Cote

SAN ANTONIO -- Did the Heat just lose to the Spurs, or to the heat?

What a shame there would be any doubt about that. What an outrageous embarrassment for the NBA, on its greatest stage, that a game-long lack of air-conditioning in San Antonio’s arena would leave fans sweating and, far worse, affect so crucial a game.

This night was about the heat in all its forms.

The literal kind draped itself over the arena here like a sopping blanket due to an electrical problem that powered the AC, sending temperatures above 90 degrees.

The Heat that starts with a capital letter withered in the conditions, squandering a fourth-quarter lead to the Spurs and losing, 110-95, in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

And now the figurative kind of heat, the bad kind, the kind that weighs heavy, is on Miami.

It was a bizarre night, an unfortunate one for this city and for the league, not just for Miami.

The lack of air-conditioning in the arena left the atmosphere almost unbearably hot, spectators fanning themselves with programs as if outdoors in the Sahara at noon. Luckily one team is from a tropical climate where humidity is king, and the other resides in what feels like northern Mexico, so hot here the eggs fry while still in the chicken.

“I’m no physics expert, but common sense tells me it was the same temperature for BOTH teams.”

Does lactic acid build up in players at the same rate? He cramped up. It happens.

Oh, how dreadful! The professional boogie-ball players had to play without air conditioning! I’m surprised they didn’t strike.

These spoiled whiners are the men we hold as “sports heroes???”

If you like your air conditioning you can keep your air conditioning!

Never ridden in the HHH but I have manned a refreshment station a time or two. Every city needs something like the HHH, it’s fun for everyone involved. :)

It's Donald Sterling's fault.

There were no better seats to watch a hockey game than the first few rows of the old Boston Garden balcony. You were literally right on top of the players.......

Same with the old Chicago Stadium. Second balcony had the best seats.

I used to think like you w.r.t. Heat and Spurs but it seems like some Miami heat players respect their marriages more than some Spurs players do.

A reporter from Miami bitching about the heat. No irony there.

So LeBron cramped up. Wasn’t he like the only player from both teams that was affected so severly? Every one else played through it. Cramps happen also to NFL players in cooler conditions. It happens and so do mechanical breakdowns. Ever have the A/C in the house or car malfunction? sHeat happens.

Obama announces new regulations that will shut down coal fired power plants and dramatically increase the cost of electricity, then the AC goes on the fritz in Game 1 of the NBA finals. Coincidence???

NBA Championship is over. Spurs won by beating OKC Thunder.

It was a great series. OKC could beat Miami, and I would be cheering for them.

Perhaps one team knew the AC was going to go out and they prepared for it. Other than that, the NBA can shrivel and die for all I care.

Of course it was a conspiracy. Your enemies suck.

You are proud of Super Bowl blackouts? Makes you want to wave the flag?

You are embarrassed and ashamed? Makes you want to spit on the flag?

How very redistributive of you to insist that the private owner of a stadium owes you some pride.

My first thought was - would Michael Jordan have taken himself out of the game? I think not.

Just another reason that LeBron will never be considered the best ever.

Not a Heat fan can’t stand ‘em but sorry Miami would stomp the Thunder just like 2 years ago. The Spurs are deeper with more weapons and seasoned veterans but I hope the Thunder win it all soon.
Go Spurs...

Been there, had that! Very uncomfortable. But I’m lucky, I usually don’t cramp up until after playing.

LeBron never played a pickup game on a 95 degree summer day?

My rec guys play outdoor games in all kinds of conditions during the summer. Of course, no one would pay to watch US!
