Rashad McCants, the second-leading scorer on the North Carolina basketball team that won the 2004-05 national title, told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" that tutors wrote his term papers, he rarely went to class for about half his time at UNC, and he remained able to play largely because he took bogus classes designed to keep athletes academically eligible.
McCants told "Outside the Lines" that he could have been academically ineligible to play during the championship season had he not been provided the assistance. Further, he said head basketball coach Roy Williams knew about the "paper-class" system at UNC. The so-called paper classes didn't require students to go to class; rather, students were required to submit only one term paper to receive a grade.

Integrity in the UNC-Chapel Hill program went out the window when Dean Smith retired.
Then it would seem to me that McCant’s bachelors degree be rescinded and Williams should be fired.
Too much honor in that though.

This is what college sports and so called “student athletes” are almost everywhere today. The people who had integrity like Dean Smith are mostly gone.

You can’t say that about the U. of Kentucky, we have the best athletes money can buy and we paid for em fair and square. I will be a fan of the graceful sport till I croak furthermore when they can stay one year and sign up for millions they can hire all the college educated folks they will need. This is what the world has become and we allowed and assisted its creation. Personnally I do not feel I have the right to gripe for those reasons.
99% of them can't sign up for millions. But they get to live an easy life with no work and lots of free stuff while the universities and the NCAA claim they are amateur student athletes.
You play for UK especially if you win a championship and your future is assured even if you don’t make the NBA. Banks and others companies line up to hire these kids. It is a sweet deal to be treated as a hero through out your life in this state.
It is a hard deal to mess up but we have had a few that have managed to.

Not bothering to show up for class prepares them for not bothering to show up at the no show jobs they will be given.
Do companies gradually get tired of keeping them on the payroll?
From my direct observation, only give up on them when they are caught dealing drugs or stealing, and it makes the news.

I enjoy watching the games. I just don’t buy the story of how they are student athletes and good people. A few are, but not the vast majority.
Even if they make it to the pros and get big contracts a lot of them still end up broke.

I agree, but slow motion train wrecks are very entertaining.
This is likely common in every major competitive athletic program, and has been for a long time. Even smaller schools offer degrees for athletes that are the academic equivalent of basket weaving. Saw some of the kids on the football team at my daughter’s (mid-size) college graduated with degrees in “Leisure Studies”, for example.
