"This is an evocative, lovely and spiritual song. His deep velvet and whiskey voice is the only one that does it justice . No matter how many times I listen to this, I still feel a little chill.

"You say I took the name in vain I don't even know the name But if I did, well, really, what's it to you? There's a blaze of light in every word It doesn't matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you And even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah....

I turned my neighbor/best friend and his family, on to Leonard Cohen recently when I loaned him my copy of Perla Batalla’s “Bird on a Wire” album.
They like country music most, and had admired the Jeff Buckley cover of “Hallelujah,” but had no real idea who L. Cohen was. They quickly stumbled upon Cohen’s concert video you feature here, and they haven’t been able to talk about anything else with me since! No one does Cohen’s songs as well as he does - his video version of the often-covered “Dance Me to the End of Love” is also the only one that really gets the song. I did think that Anthony’s version of “If It Be Your Will,” though, was on par with his own.
He’s having a real revival these days, but I’m glad to say I was a fan all along, and always appreciated the brilliance shining through even his most uneven moments.
Thanks for the post.

I like the Buckley version better. But, it’s a good song.

This is my favorite, a very intimate version by Jeff Buckley. Got actual goosebumps at the ending first time I heard it.

It’s a very beautiful song, but if you listen, I don’t think it’s particularly spiritual. Most of it seems to be about sex and passion, and how they are just as illuminating as a religious experience.

Cohen's First We Take Manhattan sung by Jennifer Warnes and played by Stevie Ray Vaughn. It doesn't get much better than that. . . . . .
Thank you!

Once I searched for all of the available videos of him doing the song, and I really liked this version for the expressive and strong vocal...love the sound of the backup singers, and the guitar solo...
"Leonard Cohen singing Hallelujah in concert. Taken from the documentry Songs From The Life Of Leonard Cohen. Unfortunately the last verse is cut out."
Live...Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
. . . . .
Then I found this complete version from that era... "An impassioned performance of Hallelujah live at San Sebastian", with much improvisation on the vocal.
