The Pont des Arts footbridge in Paris has started to collapse under the weight of padlocks that couples have been securing to the railings to 'lock their love'
The Pont des Arts footbridge over the Seine in central Paris was closed for a few hours on Sunday after a metal grill laden with padlocks left by amorous couples collapsed onto the walkway.
Padlocks began appearing on bridges in Paris and other European cities more than five years ago left by people seeking to symbolise their enduring love - often inscribed with couples' names. Lovers typically throw the keys into the river.
Nobody was hurt by the "love lock" incident, a city official told French media on Monday, adding that the bridge had reopened and the two grills across a eight foot stretch of the bridge had been replaced temporarily by wooden panels.
But in a tweet posted on the city's official web site, Bruno Juillard, the city's elected head of cultural affairs, said it "confirms that our desire to find an alternative to these locks is a real necessity."
The railings of several Paris bridges, including the central Pont des Arts which has a commanding view of the Ile de la Cite from the west, have since all but disappeared behind festoons of padlocks.

Some local hardware store is making out like a bandit.
Sell locks that all have a “master key” setting....
Go back to bridge and get them back and re-sell them....
You could make a LOT of money selling the same locks more than once...
Heheh good one
beyond tacky, I cant believe the people of paris would allow their beautiful bridges to be trashed in such a way.
Not that I favor this lovelock thing or that the authorities would permit it. Lol
They should go back and remove them when they have moved on —
The headline is alarmist. Two of the railing sections collapsed, not the bridge proper. However, the weight is considerable. I was there last year and vendors set up on the bridges and sell locks to those who haven’t brought their own and there are many thousands of locks attached to the railings. I hope some engineer has calculated the aggregate load and the bridge weight capacity.
Wonder how much longer before the bridge does collapse.
All they need to do is make another movie where the two main characters show their undying love for each other by throwing two intertwined roses off the edge of the bridge and watch them float down the Seine.
Fight fad with fad.
Back when I had long hair and had it cut off, I gave it to lox of love.
This fact supports the suggestion that a movie is responsible. I like the idea of producing a movie with a contrary message ... perhaps going to a bridge with bolt cutters and cutting off (say) 10 locks each time a relationship breaks up.
I cant believe the people of paris would allow their beautiful bridges to be trashed in such a way.
Why not? Why care about a bridge when they let their country be taken over by Muslim invaders.
Tie-wrap and lock-out tag, problem solved.
Having been on these bridges the locks are attached to ugly chain link. Take a look at the pic above.
