They're small-timers compared to the IOC.

Not once they gave the bid to Qatar, the Russian bid isn't the strongest either.

Croatia has destroyed big-game favorites in the past. I still think Spain will take it all again. Vicente Del Bosque has his team ironed out almost flawlessly. They only gave up 3 goals in qualifying and went unbeaten.

England still hasn’t gotten over the US beating them in 1950 1-0 either.

I can’t cheer for a “USA” team made up of mercenaries.

This is by far the most God-awful USA team since 2010.

I’d say they probably got over it around, say, 1966 or so...

I saw someone alluding to that in one of the articles posted here yesterday I think. 4 American players with English as their 2nd language I think is what the article said. Maybe. I guess most of us don’t know the team that well.

At least the Olympics makes an effort I think to have fair judging and largely toss out drug cheats. The World Cup officiating can be questioned sometimes. The World Cup is also made up of Professionals from the start. Some Olympic athletes are not very acceptable to me but some of them are probably okay and just ordinary folks.

"I can’t cheer for a “USA” team made up of mercenaries."

There mainly sons of American servicemen. Now, care to re-think your comment a little?

The movie “Game of their lives”; “Miracle Match” is largely fabricated. If one goes by that movie’s depiction of the 1950 match, one might read up on the conversation about it in the last 2 days or what really went on in that game.

A European team has never won a WC held outside of Europe.

If Suarez is healthy, I think Uruguay has an excellent shot.

However, one Euro team that could surprise is Belgium, I think they’ll at least make the semis.

Keegan could have always tried boxing.

A boxing Kevin Keegan? It would have been better than his singing! That was a foolish retaliation to Billy Bremner’s provocation. They didn’t call them ‘Dirty Leeds’ in the 70’s for nothing.

Agree with you about Belgium. They have a superb squad. Have to go with the general feeling here, though. We’ll probably see a South American winner.

Mexico 86 was my first World Cup memory. ‘Hand of God’ and all that. Maradona was arguably the greatest player of all time but the cheating little genius broke my 7 year old heart that day.

Given their reputation of rough play, I doubt the World Cup refs are going t oallow a second-rate team like Honduras rough up players on the good teams. If the ref is smart, he will hand out a few yellows early on against Honduras.

The 2010 World Cup song was GREAT, IMO. Keep up the great posts. LOVE the World Cup. Wish I was there.

In more mundane club news, Cesc Fabregas has signed with Chelsea, leaving Barcelona.

We were working on the rail-lines in Rosario province of Argentina and though it was a by invitation World Cup if I have that correctly, the first one in Montevideo was still spectacular and we managed to see a few games on Hols.

Well Cloughie tried to clean them up, but that didn't work out....Oh well, he got his two European titles with Forest as consolation.
