Team USA wins its World Cup opener

NATAL, Brazil - After 90 brutal minutes of end-to-end action, the Americans emerged with a thrilling 2-1 win over Ghana.

"It was a grind, but it was a wonderful win at the end of the day," coach Jurgen Klinsmann said.

U.S. fans were screaming for revenge Monday after the Black Stars eliminated the Americans from the last two Cups.

They got it. At a price.

Clint Dempsey scored a shocking goal a half-minute in, but the U.S. couldn't make it stand up. Andre Ayew tied the score in the 82nd minute after a brilliant back-heel pass from Asamoah Gyan, who had eliminated the U.S. four years ago.

And then, just four minutes later, 21-year-old John Brooks rose to head in Graham Zusi's corner kick from 8 yards - the first substitute to ever score for the United States in 30 World Cup games over 84 years. The defender, an unexpected addition to the American roster, was so overcome he fell to the field and was unable to move even after teammates climbed off the dog pile. He had made his national team debut only last August, and Brooks hadn't scored in four appearances.

Whoops, I guess it’s been a number of years since I gave up even occasionally watching hockey, when they played seasons of 100 games to knock 5 teams out of a 20 team league.

Hey old-timer, I still remember when NHL and NCAA football games could end in a draw. It worked for me, but not for the execs.

He sure did - he should get the MVP for that game.

It’s five sets to the match for men, three for women. I believe the U.S. won by a single run.

Canada doesn’t count as a foreign team. I remember my first trip to Canada (British Columbia), as far as I was concerned it was just another state - same fast food places, similar stores, same ambiance, the only difference the people were slightly more polite, and they had flower baskets hanging all over the place.

LOL.

Using that criteria, the entire world is just another US state. Our fast food is everywhere.

And I would add: “....soccer sucks! and did I mention, I’ve never played ANY SPORT in my life, but I’m here to show what a tough guy I really am....” It’s classic.

It’s hilarious, really: “I know nothing about the sport except that it’s hard, some of the Team USA members have funny names, it’s so boring to watch that I must come here to tell you, I have an enlarged prostate, and you are a lib.”

Nothing against our suburban boys - but you gotta do what you gotta do to win.

That’s what I love about our team....They’re all races, but no thugs. It reminds me of what sports used to be great about, before the thugs took over.

And for anyone who thinks soccer isn’t a tough game, why don’t you go to Clint Dempsey this morning and tell him that.

The brilliant thing about the NFL is that every play is either a tiny win or a tiny loss.

Yardage was gained or lost, a first down was made or not made.

So even when it takes the ball 10 minutes to make it to the red zone before it's turned over and no points are scored, it's more exciting because of the buildup and discreteness than the soccer ball changing hands thirty times and crossing the field twenty times in the same space of time.

Also each play is a mechanical diagram that can be picked apart.

Or they can just run windsprints for 50 minutes, take a short break, and then do it again for another 50 minutes.

If they are still conscious, they can tell Beasley he isn't tough either.

I completely agree. Can you imagine what a NFL game would be like if it had some of the “flow” that a soccer game has? Best sport on the planet, hands down (except maybe professional biathlon).
