John Brooks: U.S. soccer hero
For a time Monday if you looked up the Wikipedia entry on John Brooks, this is what you'd find:
"John Anthony Brooks, Jr. referred to as John Brooks (born January 28, 1993 in Berlin) is a German-American footballer. He is the greatest American since Abraham Lincoln."

What A Start: Three Thoughts on a wild USA World Cup win over Ghana

The curse is over.

The United States got off to the best imaginable start in their opening 2014 World Cup match against Ghana on Monday, courtesy of goal-scoring heroics from Clint Dempsey and later by substitute John Brooks.

Dream told John Brooks he would score USA winner against Ghana
The story was almost too good to be true. John Brooks, a 21-year-old centre-back who had never played in an official game for the USA, coming off the bench to score an 86th-minute winner in their World Cup opener against Ghana on Monday night. So improbable was it all that ESPN’s commentator, Ian Darke, promptly exclaimed: “He couldn’t even have dreamt it”.

Except, Brooks had done exactly that. Two days earlier, to be precise.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah said a lack of concentration caused his team to lose goals both early and late in a 2-1 defeat against the United States in World Cup Group G but he was confident his team would bounce back in their next two matches.

The U.S. got the quickest goal of the World Cup so far and the fifth fastest of all time when captain Clint Dempsey scored in a time recorded as 29 seconds.

World Cup 2014: Germany Dismantles Portugal
In the six months since the World Cup draw threw Germany and Portugal together—along with the U.S. and Ghana—for the first round, Group G has been referred to repeatedly as this tournament's Group of Death.

Germany took note of it and shrugged. In the space of 45 minutes here on Monday, it thoroughly dismantled Portugal with three first-half goals on the way to a 4-0 victory.(Read more about Germany's team.)

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller stole the show with a hat-trick, but it was only the logical culmination of superb attacking play from Germany, which carved Portugal apart all afternoon.

Germany scores 4 without a striker in lineup
Coach Joachim Loew left Germany's all-time leading scorer on the bench in the World Cup opener against Portugal and it proved to be the right move.

Loew raised some eyebrows in Germany when he decided to call up only one classic striker into his squad, the country's top-scoring Miroslav Klose.

But Loew's decision to put his faith in Thomas Mueller paid dividends on Monday, when the attacking midfielder scored his first hat trick for Germany in a 4-0 romp over Portugal in their Group G opener.

"He is such an unorthodox player, as a coach you never know what he is about to do," Loew said. "For opponents, he is very unpredictable, he only has one thought on his mind and that is to score a goal."
