Iraqi PM fires four top security officers for fall of Mosul: statement

raq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki fired four of his top security officers on Tuesday for abandoning their "professional and military duty" a week after the fall of the northwest city of Mosul to Sunni militants, the government said.

Top officers, including Lieutenant General Mehdi Sabah Gharawi, the top commander for Nineveh province where Sunni fighters have gained ground, were fired because they "failed to fulfill their professional and military duties", according to a government statement read out on state television.

I’m assuming since these guys are being tried in absentia that they are Sunni. They should be up on treason charges. Perhaps there’s a reason he didn’t go that route. He left Sunni generals in charge, probably on the theory that their loyalty to Iraq would outweigh their loyalty to their tribe. Also, he had to pretend that the new government would work and therefore had to include both tribes.

But too, with years and years of Sunni rule there may have been no Shiite officer material. Not that qualifications generally stop politicians from appointing people.
