I have a lot of friends who are Democrats. A lot. Having spent my entire adult life in the entertainment industry and much of it living in Los Angeles, that is just a fact of life.
Back in olden times (the 1990s), the Democrat politicians in Washington seemed to be much like the people who elected them. They also went about business in a way that was rather normal, if not to my particular ideological liking. This was all due to the fact that the extreme progressive hippies hadnt completed the takeover of the party that they had begun in the 1970s.
Patient lot, these hippies.
Now the fix is in and the Left-of-Castro wing of the Democratic party is fairly well in control and dystopia is upon us. The people who began their political lives by expressing an overwhelming hatred of all things government have done a 180 and now embrace the egregious use of the federal monster to the point it almost seems like a fetish. Its sort of like the no bigger smoking nag than an ex-smoker thing in reverse.
With a stealth progressive in the White House the fully armed and operational battle government has been deployed for purely political reasons in ways that should give any regular citizen pause.

Exactly, and there’s a generation of them dying out. The replacements are not nearly as wedded to the Democrats as many of them were. They’re not into “the religion thing” as they see it, either. But prior to continuously sticking his foot in his mouth, Rand Paul actually OWNED them (the younger ones) due to his filibuster on drones and credibility on privacy rights. Those people knew he was Republican, but didn’t care - they heard what they wanted to hear and were ready to vote for him (and still may). It was a shame with Rand, because if he also tried to reach the Republican base, he would have waltzed right into the White House.
But the FDR Generation - FORGET IT. If it was a choice between Hitler and a Republican, Hitler wins hands-down. In a way, McCain learned that the hard way - by being the “perfect Republican”, always reaching across, trying to pull-in those people. They laughed at him on election day and voted for the extreme leftist instead.
Here in Texas I used to work with a local. Not the brightest bulb in the lot, but lots of fun to talk to. 100% (white) Texan, loved guns, likely went to church, conservative on all social issues - and voted 100% Democrat (middle-aged, not FDR generation). I made it a point to try to figure him out. First, like you said, Democrats are for the “little guy”. Second, Democrats would NEVER touch his guns (this is what he thought, and probably still thinks). No matter what I said, it didn’t matter. I kept digging - wound up his parents were union types. That’s what unions do to people.
>>> When I find out that someone I know is left-leaning I drop them like hot potatoes. I also tell them outright why I do not want them around me or mine.
Curious as to why this would be the case. I have many lib friends of all stripes, and I think it’s important to keep them in my life for at least three reasons.
1) You can’t persuade people if you shun them.
2) Life in an echo chamber is no fun. Even if you can’t persuade them - and, frankly, there are a few I know I’ll never reach - you can still have meaningful and interesting dialogue.
3) By refusing to associate with them, you play into their stereotype of hating. I find killing them with kindness far more satisfying.
Well, eventually some people, even me, grasp the truth. My parents are dead, but maybe I can talk sense into some of my siblings.
“Curious as to why this would be the case.”
To each his own.
My mental health has improved considerably by eliminating all LIBs and other assorted DIM wits from my life. I realize they exist but life is too short to waste with them for any reason.
A better question would be, “Do they care?”
