Shelby County manhunt: 'I'm pretty sure all of Wilsonville is packing a gun today'

As authorities this morning continued a manhunt for a suspect who shot at law enforcement during a late-night chase in Wilsonville, residents were initially shocked upon hearing about the situation.

Fowler said she got a phone call early this morning and her husband read about it on Facebook. "Everybody was up and loading their guns and figuring out if they were going to work today," said Fowler, who lives about a mile and half from Wilsonville.

In the town that had an estimated 1,939 residents in the 2013 Census update, reports of the shooting and manhunt sent shockwaves throughout the tight-knit community. Many were ready to provide their own protection against an armed threat.

"We all have dogs and we all have guns out here," Fowler said.

The possible threat still existing in Wilsonville means residents are being extra vigilant and cautious today, Brazell said.

"I'm pretty sure all of Wilsonville is packing a gun today," she said. "We're armed because of the business, but if I had a personal weapon, I'd probably be carrying it today."

"We aren't worrying about it now because we've got a gun and there's a bunch of cops around," said April Robertson, who lives in Wilsonville. "Everybody down here has firearms."

Today's events are an unusual occurrence in Wilsonville, Robertson said. "We don't have a lot of action. ... This is kind of a family place," she said.

Why weren't they already loaded?! An empty or unchambered weapon is just an expensive paperweight. I keep my weapon on me until bedtime, and then it's right next to me. And I am always in Condition One.

Well these could have been multiple gun owners and they had to load there extra weapons.

For those who only own one gun having it loaded is a good idea.

Hmm...but naturally he doesn't. Just like a lot of FReepers don't after that tragic boat accident. We gotta get some boat safety training around here... ;-)

those that own dozens of guns have no need to have them all loaded.

A few well placed ones is more then enough those who only own a few.

They can decide how many they want to keep loaded.
