Etymology:
From French canaille (villain, rabble), from Italian canaglia (pack of dogs, rabble), from cane (dog), from Latin canis (dog). Ultimately from the Indo-European root kwon- (dog), which is also the source of canine, chenille (from French chenille: caterpillar, literally, little dog), kennel, canary, hound, dachshund, corgi, cynic, and cynosure. Earliest documented use: 1676.

I thought maybe Barry was referring to the corrupting influence of power and luxury with the coming home remark-and I was really disappointed that it appears that Jamal got taken out-I hope he is only temporarily disabled-a lunatic like him is needed as a foil for Barry.
The homosexual son is annoying-probably there for PC reasons, or to show how that aberration is regarded in the Middle East.
It did remind me of “The Sopranos” though, with the level of Jamal’s violence-also like the novela I mentioned-the narco/head of the family is unpredictably violent, too...

They have an opportunity with world events (Iraq) to make this show very thought provoking. I think a couple years ago people would have rooted for the hero to bring “freedom and democracy” to the country.
We see now that sometimes you do need a strong hand to keep tribal factions in line. Which is what the father said.
How will our hero “Barry” grow and in what direction?
Of course, if his reluctance remains his defining characteristic, I can see that getting old real fast.
I agree-if he backs sway from exerting some kind of control that makes an impression, he might as well head back to Cali and hope a hit man isn’t there already.
The way he ordered his son to get out of the pool and ready to go, and the flashback of what he did when he picked up the gun Jamal dropped was a window into what he is capable of-and it isn’t all good...
I see Barry as possibly being more of an anti-hero, which is probably better for ratings-more interesting...
I think he did what he did as a kid because he wasn’t getting the attention from his father. But it scarred (and scared) him and that is what led to him wanting to get away and stay away.
Yes, I think he is going to have to make tough decisions and become the person he ran away to avoid becoming.
I liked his solution to the rival faction plotting mayhem at the wedding-having one of them at each table to keep the place from being blown up-that was diplomatic...

Has anyone here seen True Detective? I checked it out at the library and we have watched 3 episodes so far but aren’t inclined to watch any more. First, Woody Harrelson is just playing himself, a despicable smarmy jerk. Second, McConnaughey is a fantastic actor but he is depressing the life out of me. And third, the language and situations are just too crude to watch. Someone tell me it has some value further in the series.
