Back in the day my friends whose fathers had guns or tools that they forbade their kids from even thinking about touching would have cut off their own hands before they defied dad in the matter.

The penalty for touching a firearm without permission - a good spanking plus banned from all guns for a year. My brothers and I never considered taking the risk of a ban. Getting permission to handle firearms - easy. We never had to wait more than a day if we asked (which happened very often).
