FWIW, this practice is fairly common amongst us frequent fliers. 1st class upgrade seats are frequently offered to service members, as are exit rows and invites to the travel lounges where no USO is present.
An American Airlines flight crew moved me from coach to first class while in flight because I was in uniform.
