1. No harpsichord. If you begin to listen to music with a harpsichord, turn it off. The only time a harpsichord is appropriate is in watching reruns of the Addams Family.
2. No Sting. Sting and his music are everything that is wrong with metrosexual men, Europe, and the Left.
I think that you are bordering upon a degree of fanaticism here but as a fellow FReeper, I will not bring your derangement to the attention of the authorities. Whilst the piano is a stronger and more universal instrument, certain pieces, especially those with strong string sections, do benefit from the more string-like sound of the harpsichord. Given that historically, a major factor in the development of the piano/pianoforte was the strength of the sound, the modern amplified harpsichord does well for the kind of music that suits it.
Compare BWV 1058 "Concerto Number 7" between the Harpsichord and the Piano versions. I do prefer the former.
Thanks for the inspiration this morning, I am enjoying Kenneth Gilbert and "The English Concert" (Trevor Pinnock) for the Bach pieces. Beautiful and quite the improvement over Washington dissonance!
PS: Based upon your obvious knowledge and superior judgement, which would you think be superior as back ground music for Ahmed Abu Khattala's cell and interrogation, Boy George or Anton Berg? Would there be any Geneva Code fallout?
For those who enjoy JS Bach on harpsichord and clavichord, let me recommend the music of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. While the music of JS is mathematical clockwork perfection, CPE’s music is playful, almost jazzy.

Whenever I am involved in any computer or journaling work, I listen to harpsichord music. I have found that when I listen to orchestral or organ pieces, I shift to listening, and not so much on pen- or keyboard at hand. My mental picture is rather funny, though. It’s “Lurch”.
Sting has been involved with recording some of Dowland’s works, with a lutist, and listening to some of Dowland’s original works, today, are quite emotional.
But, the harpsichord comes first.

Yes, but her husband notes that you are speaking of the verrrrrry narrow William F. Buckley, Jr., exception to the general rule against harpsichords. Since Mr. Buckley is regrettably no longer among us, appropriate music now includes recordings of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Al Jolson, Buddy Holly, rockabilly artists, Elvis Presley, ABBA, the Beach Boys and absolutely nothing by the Liverpool mopheads or whatever seems to pass as heavy metal or modern excuses for rock music. Country music is a perfectly acceptable category of which I, at least, have lesser knowledge but respect.
Wanda Landowska will not be pleased.....
