The Department of Veterans Affairs is making amends to an 89-year-old World War II vet whose monthly veteran benefit check was slashed from $300 to $6 to recoup an overpayment he never knew about.

The VA did the same thing to mt dad, except he wrote several letters telling them they were overpaying. The letters were ignored, and then when he could no longer work and really needed the benefits and was disabled, they tried taking it away.

After some phone call and letters from me, they forgave it.

I do not understand why the VA pays benefits to anyone whose disability is not a direct cause of serious injury sustained during military service. Apart from that single legitimate qualification, the Veterans Administration is just one more welfare program to be milked until it goes bankrupt.
