With crumbling economy and failure to deliver promised European freebies to a Maidan crowd, Poroshenko would use every opportunity to escalate this crisis.
He certainly would and is. ..and the “cease-fire” never was that...just a stall. The prior weeks US had sent Dept. Head of Security along with some of his people, to Kiev. To work with the National Guard, Police etc. So they just needed time to set the stage as we see it playing out now.
The US/EU/IMF have actually more to loose than Poroshenko so they're pushing hard for the East to get “Wrapped up”. Trouble for Poroshenko is he can't control the Oligarchs nor their army's.....not to mention Maidan. But he still must “appear” to be in control.
Ukraine people are the least of anyone’s concern, both in the East and throughout Ukraine, for the objective is control of land and revenues/resources and business..and we can all see that. The best Ukraine will be is a debtor state, and even that might be pushing it as the Eu and Russia seem to have abandoned what was first hoped for in the country.
