Salvador sets up Belgium-USA for high-scoring World Cup matchup

SALVADOR, Brazil – The eyes of two nations will be glued to it no matter what happens, but statistical history from this World Cup suggests that the United States' round-of-16 showdown with Belgium on Tuesday could turn into a high-scoring classic.

Because if you want to see goals galore, you'll see them in Salvador.

The previous line was more than a terrible attempt at rhyming. A genuine trend has seen 21 goals rattled in over the course of just four games at Arena Fonte Nova. Forwards such as U.S. captain Clint Dempsey, who has already struck twice in the tournament, and Belgium's Eden Hazard, who has yet to score, will be licking their lips.

Not since 1958 has a World Cup venue averaged so many goals per game, leaving soccer experts baffled. Scoring has been up in general at this tournament, but Salvador has been the epicenter of the goal glut.

"It is quite unprecedented in modern times," said John Ley, a soccer statistics expert for the Daily Telegraph in London. "Football was very different going back half a century or more and there was a higher number of goals in general. For there to be so many in Salvador is remarkable."

I was in Salvador in 2000. And Sao Paolo. But NOT for soccer! We were in Rome Italy when they won the World Soccer Championship on 2006. I was hugged and kissed by so many gorgeous Italian men. We were at at outdoor pizza place and once Italy won, it was lots of hugging and kissing, and they didn’t care I was old enough to be their mother, or grandmother! LOL

Howard should be yelling at his defenders, they are acting like they have run out of gas, this AET, little help for Howard.

OUCH Belgium just scored point #2
When we were in Rome and Italy won the world champtionship 2006 it went to a kick off after a tie game It was exciting and after Italy won there was no crime Just lots of cars driving up and down the streets honking. Well behaved huge crowds. Huge crowd watched the game at the Circo Massimo. And they had huge jumbotrons to watch the game and the next morning there wasn’t a piece of trash there. All cleaned up. Compared to US sports fans, very well behaved in Rome!

The clock goes to 120 minutes if anyone wonders, we have about 12 minutes left with a minute or 2 added on.

After the foot has hit the ball, all the energy of the kick is in the ball. When the ball hits your head, depending on the angle, some, most, or all of the energy of the kick goes directly against your head. Can be quite painful indeed…

We scored, so Klinsmann was saying we should have more time. I think that is right, an extra minute... to bring it to 2.

Belgium didn’t pass it around too much to waste time but their was some ugly fouling at the end.

Congrats USA, Tim Howard.

Good play by the US. Only a little luck was missing at the end.

Very bad offside call just ago.

This is what the announcers say. Strange, some other people are saying it was not blown offside. Just saying.

“90:00 +2:02

Attempt missed. Chris Wondolowski (USA) right footed shot from the centre of the box is too high. Assisted by Jermaine Jones with a through ball. “
