The United States was eliminated from the World Cup, but it went out battling. Belgium beat the Americans, 2-1, in the Round of 16 at Salvador, with all the goals coming in extra time.
Tim Howard was heroic in keeping the game scoreless through 90 minutes, and he ended the evening credited officially with 15 saves. But in the third minute of extra time, Kevin De Bruyne finally broke the deadlock. He was set up by Romelu Lukaku, who had just come into the match.
Lukaku made it 2-0 at 105 minutes, seemingly putting the match out of reach.
But the 19-year-old Julian Green came on for the start of the second extra period and scored on his first touch, taking an inch-perfect pass from Michael Bradley and volleying it home to make it 2-1 in the 107th minute.
The Americans came close to tying a couple of times in the final minutes but couldnt quite connect.

Amen, Sister!
I'll grab a 12-pack and join you. When we're done, we can go in the back yard and watch the grass grow.
Of course, there's no accent in “whiffle ball.”
The sports landscape is changing. Now we have soccer, lacrosse, board sports, etc. I was in Fort Myers last week. A bunch of kids in my hotel for a select team baseball tourney. But they were playing soccer in the hotel parking lot!
...and you had to be a REAL American to slide into third!
Well, I can go back to hating soccer now.
And a lot of torn up knees!
Who is up for an exciting game of checkers?
It does not even resemble the country I grew up in
It's also the same as Winston Churchill, but don't let that stop you. :)
Everybody picks on inner cities. But in my local inner city we still have sand lots where black kids bring a bat, a ball and a mitt. As bad as this area is, suddenly it looks like 1959 and all is right with the world.
No, it won’t. Nobody called Winnie “wc” to his face.
I just about always want the U.S. to win but I am sort of glad it is over. I tried several times to get interested in soccer but I just can’t understand how it ever got so popular.
I will be glad when the whole thing is over.
Maybe this is why Obama is bringing the 3rd world into our country via the southern borders - to beef up the interest in soccer.
I am certain that has to be a top priority for this country!
Did you watch the game?
LOL. I loved whiffle balls as a kid for some reason. I guess I got good hits off them or something. Spaldeens went right into the ground. I don’t know why my father, uncles and brother put up with my bad batting.
No, I was too busy placing accents grave and a goo on my English words.
As a kid one game we played a lot was kick-ball. It was like baseball except the (thin, air-filled ball) ball was rolled and we kicked it.
