In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

chivy \CHIV-ee\ verb
1. to tease or annoy with persistent petty attacks
2. to move or obtain by small maneuvers.

Example sentence:
"After chivvying a batch [of whirligig beetles] into a food storage box, Lemann, manager of animal and visitor programs [at the Audubon Insectarium], sniffed his fingers. The beetles emit a chemical to deter predators, but they're no stink bugs: 'It smells like sour apple candy. I love it.'"
— Janet McConnaughey, Associated Press State and Local Wire, October 8, 2012

Etymology:
"Chivy," which is also spelled "chivvy," became established in our language in the early 20th century and at first meant "to harass or chase." Early usage examples are of people chivying a chicken around to catch it and of a person chivying around food that is frying. The word itself is from the British noun of the same spelling meaning "chase" or "hunt." The noun is believed to be derived from "Chevy Chase"—a term for "chase" or "confusion" that is taken from the name of a ballad describing the 1388 battle of Otterburn between the Scottish and English. (A "chase" in this context is an unenclosed tract of land in England that is used as a game preserve.)

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

It’s a pretty nasty situation in Lackland now, where many are being housed. Why they aren’t being bussed back across the border is beyond me. A+ for you.

Yes, it is-out here, small business owners have la migra on speed dial on a good day, so no work for them here, and for those who think to disappear in the country, no way that is going to happen. They sent some “kids”-of-totally-ignorant-parents to Dallas for shelter, but it is said to be very temporary-I’d love to see planes lined up at DFW to take them back to where they came from-send their countries the bill.

No one out here wants to associate with someone who has been around any illegals because they don’t want to bring diseases or parasites to kids, whether theirs or a neighbors’...

I’d prefer to send them home and not pay to care for them indefinitely.

I’d prefer to just simply leave them on the other side before they enter.

But if we have to house people while we sort them out, we should do it in our already existing prison camp for foreign criminals.

A simple message that anyone caught will be sent to Gitmo would deter.
