Competition is minimal here in MA, with only Comcast be much of an alternative

Do they have Verizon FIOS in your area?
It’s worth checking — with the prices you pay, the FIOS would be of comparable price.

Comcast is a LOT faster than Verizon. You do not have to buy phone service from either one. Either ditch hardline service altogether, or, if you must have a land line get magic jack or some low cost VOIP alternative.

It may be hard to believe but not too many years ago, I accessed the Internet with a 2800 baud modem and paid $3.60 an hour for access.
I used to have to disable images so that pages would load faster.

Considering what my friends in England and Europe pay for their BW, which is way more than what I can get (at any price), Americans are getting ripped off.

Those prices are crazy!
I’ve been paying $40 a month for 30Mbs for over a decade.

I kept Comcast when they bought out Warner in our area years ago. Have paid $40.12 a month for cable internet ever since that time. Also dropped AT&T for business land line and went with Vonage for $10.00 a month two years ago. Vonage also includes efax number with no additional cost. Most of our calls are long distance so saves us lots of money and works well thus far.

Comcast Xfiniti is far superior to DSL, paying $20 a month for 25 mbs only, using Directv and Vonage. No reason for a ground line any more unless you have zero options.

Imagine living in a new bldg and finding out that ATT has an exclusivity contract and that no Sat dishes are permitted and only finding out after the lease has been signed. Imagine paying $167.78 per month for TV and broadband and that half the stations offered are infomercials, Spanish, obscure cable networks and others that are of interest to a very small slice of deviants. We watch a handful of channels of the 200 offered. You don’t get a chance to pick and choose if you opt for the lower level TV service and of course, the channels we do watch are mostly not included in the low tier. And they know it.
I could cheerfully do without TV but the other half is still stuck on the cable nets.

Do they have Verizon FIOS in your area? No, and you would be right if they had it here. Lots of politics i guess.

Considering what my friends in England and Europe pay for their BW, which is way more than what I can get (at any price), Americans are getting ripped off. But how much tax is charged to the providers>Outside that and infrastructure and normal system maintenance, I do think getting 60 a month from us when little local maintenance seems to be needed, and old phone lines, makes for a nice profit.

We have Verizon DSL. Trying to obtain the service we pay for is a constant struggle. They have the absolute worst customer service I have ever seen in my life.
Good luck to you.

"No, and you would be right if they had it here. Lots of politics i guess." FIOS isn't available here, either. Unless, that is, you happen to be a Verizon exec or his friends. This guy has a lake home not too far away, and the company put in whatever equipment was necessary for him and his buddies to obtain FIOS.
Did I mention I hate Verizon?

Comcast is a LOT faster than Verizon. You do not have to buy phone service from either one. Either ditch hardline service altogether, or, if you must have a land line get magic jack or some low cost VOIP alternative. Further research shows that the lowest price for just Comcast (up to) 25mbps Internet is $40 month (+ taxes and fees), for the first 12 months, then 55 after 24 months, then up to $67. And is restricted to one single outlet! Even Comcast Economy Plus (3mbps) is $40 month, and 6mbps is 50.
Add to that the cost of Vonage at $24.99/mo and even the 12 mo special is higher than Verizon Verizon Freedom Essentials and "High Speed Internet Enhanced" at 63.00, though the speed likely would be higher with Comcast .
Verizon High Speed Internet Enhanced is $30 by itself, but home phone service is required, the cheapest being $ 12.70 /month, but which cost $.016 per minute even for local calls, plus long distance charges. Add Vonage to that for actual phone use and its 68.00 a month combined, plus taxes.
Magic Jack would be the cheapest phone at $120 for 5 Years ($2 a month), plus portage fees if you want to keep your old number. So for 45.00 with Verizon you could get nationwide/Canada calling plus up to 15mbps Internet, or around 55 for Comcast. But i see MJ issues .

I actually have found them to be good, but all i have is phone and Internet. Comcast on the other hand gets people in with specials, restricted to a single outlet, and then raises prices substantially.
And it seems the worse customer service is with Magic Jack. But the price is by far the lowest.
