If a relative of mine had died in a pileup because no one felt like pacifying her forcefully, then I would have done a lot worse than punch her a dozen times in the face.

I have to agree here - if she was trying to throw herself into traffic and was resisting this guy's attempts to stop her it seems he can justify what he did.

Not to say he might have been able to accomplish the same without blows to the face, but that is an effective way to disable struggling person long enough to cuff them.
