“When you get older you can’t move as fast. When people figure that out is when they’ve grown up.”

Tomcats and old men die of exactly the same cause. They don’t allow for the effects of aging. The tomcat jumps the six feet between rooftops, a distance he’s made hundreds of times over the many long years. But eventually, he ends up a foot short. I’ve known any number of elderly men who said, in effect, “I’m going to chainsaw up that entire oak tree this morning.”

I’ve known a lot of men, usually retired, who get carried away with trimming trees. I heard Mr. T, in real life was accused of this in his neighborhood. Maybe it’s part of a middle-aged crisis, where some guys try to control every single thing within sight, and the wife has long stopped playing that game to their satisfaction.

Or more likely, shoveling the driveway. Every winter, I hear of older men dropping dead in their driveways on account of shoveling snow. In my younger days, I'd shed down to a T-shirt and knock out my driveway in one session in zero degree wind chill. Eventually, it would take me 2 or 3 sessions in hat, scarf and gloves. These days, I pay somebody to come plow and watch them from the window while I'm sipping my coffee.

Getting old sucks but because I didn't waste my life spray-painting graffiti on subway cars and brick walls, I have the money to pay somebody else to plow my driveway (and mow my lawn).

I am certain that you have heard the old joke about the two bulls on the hill. The younger one says, “Let’s run down and breed a couple of those young heifers.” The old bull says, “No, let’s walk down and breed them all.”
