I agree with you to a point, there is that space of time when people wake up and they experience a form of paralysis, and their minds could be creating figments of their imagination to deal with the fear of that paralysis.
Otherwise, aliens don’t leave traces of their presence, they can pass through walls, they basically torture and torment humans, they appear at night more than day time, and so on and so on...
Whitly Strieber who has been plagued by them, and wrote books of his experiences, has said as much that they just may be more demonic than benevolent.
