Udo Voigt, the former leader of the Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands (NPD), has praised Adolf Hitler, was convicted for glorifying the Waffen SS, and infamously claimed no more than 340,000 Jews had died in the Holocaust. Historians agree that the total number of Jews exterminated under Hitler was about six million.
Germanys first far right MEP led the NPD from 1996 to 2011. German intelligence classifies the organisation as a far right extremist party. There was a failed attempt to ban the party in 2003. Another attempt, arguing its ideology is identical to Hitlers, is currently in the German courts.
Parliament President Martin Schulz, a member of Germany's Socialist Democratic Party, said, Everyone who denies the Holocaust and who is against human dignity, democracy and plurality will encounter the strongest of resistance from me.
The European Parliament is the place where the representatives of the European people work hard to ensure a good and peaceful future for us on our continent. There is no place for racists and anti-Semites in this house.

Thought you might have meant “Big Ed” Schultz, and was wondering why he would mind a Nazi in *any* position of power.
Um...six million murdered would have been a problem, but hey, it’s only 340,000? This boy...he ain’t right in the head.
I really wish that journalists would not equate nazism with “Right Wing”. Nazism and fascism are just slightly different flavors of the same poison as Socialism and Communism, which, of course go for government control of EVERYTHING.
The extreme “Right” would be no government control at all, total free enterprise, and total freedom for each person to act in accordance with his or her own conscience. This is a FAR cry from fascism.
In fact, “Nazi” comes from the full title of “National SOCIALIST German WORKERS’ Party”.
But, alas, the media uses “Right Wing” to describe everything from Joe The plumber to Hitler. (sigh)
THe NPD is avowedly national socialist (and anti-freemarket) making it a far left not far right party.
If one uses proportional representation and has 96 seats allocated this way on a single-district principle, stuff like this will happen. Three parties receiving a much lower percentage of the vote also received seats.
While disagreeing about the number of Jews killed by more than an order of magnitude is odd, it is not the same thing as denying altogether that Jews were targeted, which seems the more important point.
Did he actually say that 340,000 wasn’t a problem? Whether or not he considers it a problem would seem a rather important point, and attributing a view either way to him without some sort of evidence only feeds the idea that his opponents are unreasoning and do not bother to examine actual evidence.
