Worker Buried Alive After Sugar Plant Pulls Safety Device
Newser ^ | June 8, 2014 | Rob Quinn

A worker at a Pennsylvania sugar plant died buried alive in sugar in an accident that could have been prevented by a safety device removed just 13 days earlier, a ProPublica investigation finds. Janio Salinas—a 50-year-old who, like every other employee in the CSC Sugar warehouse in Fairless Hills, was a temp worker—died after climbing inside a huge hopper to remove sugar clogs on February 25, 2013. The warehouse manager told the Occupational Safety and Health Administration that he had asked for a safety screen to prevent such an accident, but after one was installed, the plant manager decided to get rid of it because it was slowing down production.

(snip) The death at the plant that supplies the makers of Snapple drinks and Ben & Jerry's ice cream was one of numerous gruesome deaths that spurred OSHA to boost enforcement of rules affecting temp workers . . .

Sure, shut down the temp agencies and see where the (already bogus) unemployment rate gets to.

Gee. Those old socialist Ben & Jerry’s are actually looking to make a profit and squeeze production out of old unsafe equipment using temporary workers working unsafely inside non-OSHA and unsafe tanks without protective gear! gee.

Non-trained in tank entry procedures too i see.

Uh oh. Time to shut her down, send everyone home, rebuild from the ground up following strict federal safety regulations, inspect, find violations, rebuild from the ground up again and then unionize instituting a 25 hour work week with 4 weeks paid vacation.

I guess moochelle was/is right about sugar being a killer. And salt too. And seeing a picture of her can be at the bare minimum, nauseating.

They could do all that, or they could hire a new plant manager who will adhere to safety protocol.

Well, he WAS just a temp. Maybe they didn’t think he was scheduled to show up for work for a while.

While I agree with the sentiment about BJs, this was not a BJ-owned plant, but a separate plant that supplies them with the sugar for their ice cream.

They could shut down all the temp agencies and Obama’s numbers would show no change.

Well! The only correct response is to boycott Ben & Jerry’s because they greedily support and enable unsafe sweatshops.

Illegals and temp workers. That is how business is done today in America.
