Men who cycle more ........ more likely to develop prostate cancer, study finds

FULL TITLE: Men who cycle more than nine hours a week are six times more likely to develop prostate cancer, study finds

Middle aged men who spend nine hours a week on their bike are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer, new research suggests.

A British study of 5,200 cyclists is the biggest research project ever conducted on the health impact of cycling.

It suggests that cyclists in in their 50s who bicycle for more than nine hours a week may be up to five times as likely to receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

The team of scientists at University College London, found there was no link between cycling and infertility or erectile problems - an age-old health myth.

But the statistical link with prostate cancer could create a new, and unexpected, health concern for the millions of men who regularly cycle.

The sport has already been linked with testicular cancer, with repeated impacts raising the chance of being diagnosed with the disease. Former cyclist Lance Armstrong was famously treated for testicular cancer.

But the connection to prostate cancer has not been made before.

The team said the statistical link – tested in the 2,000 participants who were over the age of 50 - did not necessarily prove that cycling directly causes prostate cancer.

They said the results were surprising and suggested that men who cycle frequently may be more health conscious, leading to more chance of being diagnosed.

But their research found that cyclists were no more likely to visit their GPs regularly than anyone else.

And they said they could not rule out that the cancer cases were caused by an increased pressure on the prostate.

Well, I can testify that long stretches on a bike can cause loss of sensation in a location where men really don’t want to lose sensation.

Luckily, so far it’s always been temporary.

I wonder if you’re also more likely to cheat on your wife and lie to your fans and friends as well.

I will say they are remarkably poorly designed for use on a bicycle. Or possibly bicycle seats are poorly designed for use by men.

Or both.

I remember reading sports & medical articles in the 90’s about the high rate of impotence among cyclists, they blamed the shape of the seat as it pushed up against the prostate.

This just adds more fuel to that theory. Thank God I’m no biker.

No, you should sit down, relax, have a beer...perhaps you’d like some cheesy poofs??

:-)

I usually just strap it to my knee.

I suspect it would be easier to adapt the latter to the former than vice versa.

To heck with a better mousetrap. Invent a bicycle seat that isn’t a torture instrument and the world will pedal to your door.

There have been several attempts to change the design of the bicycle seat to accomodate the male anatomy.

Crushing your junk is no way to exercise. Come up with a bike that you can stand up on.

Well, my sister’s friend had a bicycle enthusiast for a husband. He didn’t look the part - nerdy and slightly stout - but he was out alot, including statewide tours. Turns out he was cheating on her, sometimes using those rides as a means for his trysts.

My biggest beef is them taking over our roads. There really is no call for that. This didn’t happen until 10 years ago. They are not at all the equal of a 2-ton car that can go over 100mph.

I know I would. There are some “different” designs out there, but none I’ve found that seem to be accepted as a real improvement.

The big problem is probably that individual anatomical peculiarities make a big difference. What works for Sherman may not work at all for Albert.

So, there is a proven link.

What did the manufacturers know and when did they know it?

If your kids see you riding does that make them want to ride and doom them to prostate cancer?

Is it time for the government to tax bicycles and use the resulting funds for anti-bicycliing information?

When do the lawsuits start?

Etc. Etc........
