Winners of the 2014 Dronestagram Photo Contest have finally been selected! Picking winners was a very difficult task especially because of the great quality of the photos that have been submitted. We tried to reward the photos that show the best the fantastic potential offered by drones in terms of image.

It’s been an amazing first edition with many photos entered from everywhere in the world. Thank you all for joining in.

The election of the best aerial photo has been conducted by Dronestagram and National Geographic. Dronestagram has displayed some choice entries randomly during the contest which, although demonstrating the high leveling of competition we have come to expect, have no bearing on the end result.

A number of years ago I had the idea to build a drone that, from the ground, looked like a large bird that was commonly seen circling above in the country where it was deployed.

I read a story, which indicated the pentagon was working on exactly that - a drone that looked like a bird.

And, it would land and ‘perch’ on a power line to recharge.

My original thought was for solar power, since the top side of the “bird” would rarely be seen.

I hadn’t considered that we could overcome the challenges for this thing to actually land.

I don’t think that’s a stream, looks more like a dredged channel.

It would have to have a way to get that recharge from the EM generated by a high voltage line. Without a connection to ground, it won't get squat. Though, I'm betting that would be fatal to any sort of electronics. It would have to be EM related.
