My local lib rag, The La Crosse (Wi) Tribune headlined it today.
I have to admit, I find it amazing. In the late 19th century, John D Rockefeller was making a boatload of money with Standard Oil. People hated him for his wealth, but they sure did love getting petroleum products at cheaper prices, better quality, and more reliable availability.
How times have changed. I think there are so many people who have a mindset that takes for granted things like energy availability and reliability.
It’s like liberals who drive electric cars (largely powered by coal) yet rail against coal-fired plants. Or people who are so far removed from the source of their food that they tend to think a steak grows inside a Styrofoam tray enclosed in cellophane.
They simply don’t realize that our civilization is built on a veneer that is composed of an amalgam of the ready availability of food, energy, and water.
Energy truly is our lifeblood. Environmentalists and all stripes of liberals subscribe to a kind of natural world Rousseauian utopia where there is no oil, coal, or gas exploration to sully the landscape.
It would be comical if their efforts to those ends weren’t going to drag the rest of us along with them, but alas, we will be. They are so detached from reality sometimes, that they fail to consider that they very likely would meet a violent demise long before they ever reach their utopia.
If they would leave the rest of us alone, I wouldn’t care, but unfortunately, they seem bent on making the rest of us walked that road with them. Most likely it’s because they want to have someone to point a finger at when things go badly.
