But, Ebbets Field would not have survived too many more years. If O’Malley had his way, he would have built an Astrodome type stadium in downtown Brooklyn.
Its funny how in the 50s and 60s, we saw so many multi use stadiums built. But nowadays, the major trend has been to build old fashioned style ball parks.

But the Team(Dodgers) would have stayed in Brooklyn. So instead of retaining 1(or maybe 2) teams NYC LOST 2(Dodgers and the Giants followed the Dodgers West).

My dad use to tell me about seeing the Dodgers back in his hometown of Brooklyn. He loved going to that stadium, and Yankee stadium.
I’ve mentioned to a few people here, that my father’s health is failing and we don’t expect him to be here at Christmas.
So seeing this on a rainy day when I couldn’t visit him today, has me weeping and connecting with him, when he was a younger man, and not a father. I don’t know if that makes sense, I’m just so happy to see this video.
You’re right. Its too bad that New York lost both the Giants and Dodgers. The issue of replacing Ebbets Field caused the loss of both teams.

Yeah, and the buildings are financed by a combination of taxes and public bonds. The owners demand new stadiums every 35 or 40 years. The bonds that paid for the stadium being demolished haven’t even been retired yet.
That, and baseball, is part of what makes America unique. I will never forget attending games at Tiger Stadium (Briggs Stadium then, but I am dating myself) as a child. That first glimpse of the green grass as you walked up the ramp towards the field was thrilling. Still the greenest grass I have ever seen.

The first time I walked into Tiger Stadium was 1968. I thought I had entered a cathedral. It was like walking into another world.
Some cities don’t even go 35,to 40 years before its time for a new stadium. Metrodome lasted 30,years. Kingdome only lasted about 25. Atlanta is replacing both the Georgia $Dome and Turner Field after barely 20,years. Stadiums have a short shelf life apparently nowadays.

I guess I was extrapolating from old data. I had Philadelphia’s Veterans’ Stadium and Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Stadium in mind. I know that the lifetime of any sports complex is still trending lower.
FYI the grass at Comerica is not as green but the team is a lot better.
And Red Sox management has done some upgrades, and is committed to be at Fenway for the foreseeable future. Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are the only major league parks I know which were 100 years old and still in use, and not slated to be replaced anytime soon.
Mets owner Fred Wilpon was a big Brooklyn Dodgers fan, which is why he built it like that.
My best childhood memories are the hours spent with my grandfather sitting on the $1.00 Bleachers (very well-worn 2x6's) at Connie Mack Stadium in the early 60's...

I know what you mean. My mother was born and raised in Brooklyn and, with her father and older brother, went to many Dodger games at Ebbets Field and some at Yankee Stadium. Although my mother is now in 80s, take her to an Atlanta Braves spring training game in Orlando and she is like a teen again, cheering and booing with gusto and making sharp comments on the players and their skills.
