Word For The Day, Wednesday, July 16, 2014-- oriflamme

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

oriflamme [awr-uh-flam, or-]

hear it pronounced

noun
1. the red banner of St. Denis, near Paris, carried before the early kings of France as a military ensign.
2. any ensign, banner, or standard, especially one that serves as a rallying point or symbol.

Origin
1425–75; late Middle English oriflam < Middle French oriflamme, Old French, equivalent to orie golden (< Latin aurea, feminine of aureus, derivative of aurum gold) + flamme flame

History
sacred banner of St. Denis, late 15c., from O.Fr. orie flame, from L. aurea flamma "golden flame." The ancient battle standard of the kings of France, it was of red or orange-red silk, with two or three points, and was given to the kings by the abbot of St. Denis on setting out to war. Cotgrave says it was "borne at first onely in warres made against Infidells; but afterwards vsed in all other warres; and at length vtterly lost in a battell against the Flemings." It is last mentioned in an abbey inventory of 1534.

Many Texans are carrying the Gadsden Flag, “Don’t Tread On Me,” in response to the influx of Central American illegal immigrants spawned by the policies of this corrupt administration.

Pretty soon both of those license plates will be banned, replaced by "Accept Illegals."

(Chuckle.) Paper that is carefully folded into interesting shapes and then set ablaze. I'm surprised it hasn't caught on here, although Obama is trying it with the Constitution.

Indeed! Too bad "we" doesn't include our fearless leader.

“2. any ensign, banner, or standard, especially one that serves as a rallying point or symbol.”....

I can see this being banned within a week. Anything that does NOT agree with the liberals thinking will automatically be banned FOREVER.

Yeah—the Stars and Stripes won’t be “diverse” enough for the commies in charge.

It’s already been court ordered to be removed in one case because it was perceived as “a threat”.

I recall the case. It was Cinquo de Mayo (what we used to call “May 5th”) and the court ruled that flying the American flag in a school that has a lot of Mexicans was incendiary.

it’s getting increasingly more difficult to stomach the news. every day it seems like it’s the worst imaginable, and then some new outrage takes place. I just read the FR story about Hillary on John Stewart written up in TPM and the comments after were just beyond belief. The left is fully ready to follow that woman’s oriflamme in 2016.

We knew Obama would try to destroy the country. The surprise is how successful he has been.
