Posted on 07/17/2014 4:44:15 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

factitious (fak-TISH-uhs) adjective
1. Artificial.
2. Sham.

Example sentence:
"'For me, this is the only real place,' David says in the novel, but for the reader the city remains disappointingly factitious."
--Say Nice Things About Detroit; The New Yorker; Aug 27, 2012.

Etymology:
From Latin facticius (artificial), past participle of facere (to do). Earliest documented use: 1646.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

You say factitious.
I say fictitious.

Factitious. Fictitious. IT IS CRIMINAL either way.

The Tyrant’s background remains odiously fictitious
and factitious and continously hidden
as he meticulously destroys America by violating
the US Constitution for his Koran.

Presidential persona factitious
Since Congress does little

I think mambo sauce may be more apropos. BTW, that's the song that the wedding party is going to be introduced to and we will walk in. It's played at Caps, Wizards and Redskins games. Go-go is a uniquely DC sound.

saw that yesterday and was appalled. yes, he never had a chance and it grows dimmer as time passes. but what do you think about Rubio? is his goose cooked over immigration? he was on oreilly and sounded good to me. I know I thought he was dead in the water awhile back but wondered if that had ameliorated over time.

Rubio is not the one born in Canada, right?

I think this border fiasco now actually works for him, cause he can pivot and reposition himself. He’ll still be distrusted on the issue, but I think this summer is killing the issue for the foreseeable future.

Of course, the FReeper cranks will still hate him.

what hath Francis wrought. confusion. uncertainty. in spades.

After an agonizing interregnum, a new pope was elected, a good and holy man with a pastoral heart. All seemed to be well, though he was not dogmatically inclined as Benedict had been: all that was left to the CDF. I found myself explaining that Francis was hermeneutically absolutely Benedictine, entirely orthodox, everything a pope should be, just with a different way of operating. I still believe all that. But here is increasingly a sense of uncertainty in the air, which cannot be ignored. “One knew where the Church and the Pope stood” says Fr Blake. Now, we have a Pope who can be adored by such enemies of the Catholic Church as the arch abortion supporter Jane Fonda, who tweeted last year “Gotta love new Pope. He cares about poor, hates dogma.” In other words, for Fonda and her like, the Church is no longer a dogmatic entity, no longer a threat. That’s what the world now supposes: everything is in a state of flux. The remarried will soon, they think, be told they can receive Holy Communion as unthinkingly as everyone else: that’s what Cardinal Kasper implied at the consistory in February. Did the pope agree with him? There appears to be some uncertainty, despite the fact that the Holy Father had already backed Cardinal Mueller’s insistence that nothing has changed.

yes, there is no rehabilitating them with the FR cranks, but then other than Palin or Cruz, no one has a chance with the unappeasables. I did think that maybe the current crisis might enable a pivot on his part. Like I said, he sounded good to me last night on the issue.

I haven’t seen or heard from him lately.

I think Scott Walker could be an interesting candidate, but don’t know if he’s going to want to run. Just on the basis of attacking sacred cows and really trying to save taxpayer dollars. I don’t know much else about him.

It would be a factitious comment on my part if I said I didn’t think you where making it too easy to criticize the current regime given recent events.

It’s a breaking news story when the regime doesn’t make a factitious argument for what they are doing.

xshub and I were talking to the kids about the olden days when we moved to DC after college and what stuff was like, How the subway only went to Ballston and didn’t have the LED signs on the sides telling you what train it was, and there weren’t boards telling you when a train was coming etc. and the conductors would jauntily announce as the doors were closing “this train DO go to Ballston” LOL@!

they can afford to do that now, bc you have a better idea of what train you are on and which way you are headed bc of the signage. in the 80s you had to listen and decipher.

I saw this on twitter when it was posted and LMAO. Prob would help if you were familiar with the song Get Low, but this drunk guy slayed me. You see all kinds on the metro!

It is overcast, humid with sprinkles off and on-the “real” rain is supposed to happen later-

The circus of daily briefings
To a once-complacent press
Is becoming so factitious
Even they see it is a mess

First, a hustle from a carney
Right from a traveling show
Luring them to the tent flap
Answering questions with “no”

Now, Earnest is put forward
It is just more of the same-
He deflects and he dissembles
And is nothing like his name...
