AP is reporting that blues guitar great Johnny Winter has died in a Zurich hotel room.
Rest in peace, Johnny.

Check out Chris squire’s interview of that hendrix marquis gig. The Syn opened for hendrix that night. Won’t elaborate here out of respect for the late great Johnny Winter. But squire’s comments are quite interesting.
Sad to see johnny pass and wish I could have seen him more recently. Last time was in late 90s or early 00s. Awesome player.
The best on slide guitar, with the possible exception of Duane Allman IMHO. Saw him live as well, a living legend. He seemed very frail the last several years.
I think he played on The Band’s album “Last Waltz”
I saw him in concert about five years ago. He was a shell of his former self. While he played and sang, he didn’t sing all of his songs and most of the solo guitar playing was left to his bandmates. He sat in a chair the whole time and never even got up except to get off stage. Quite frankly I’m surprised he lasted this long after seeing him then.
This just goes to show what a life of drugs (especially heroin) will do to someone.

I read his biography (Raisin’ Cain).
I admired him for giving up the fame and glory of rock and roll to return to older blues - simply because he enjoyed the genre so much.
A lot of folks would have stuck with what brought in the big bucks regardless of what they really wanted to play.
According to his book “Raisin’ Cain”, Janis Joplin really pursued him.
Johnny became addicted to methadone as a result of being treated for heroin addiction. He only kicked the methadone habit in the last few years.
Winter claimed that his former manager Teddy Slatus enabled his addiction so that he could manipulate him and bleed money from him.
I saw him once in the ‘70s, at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ.
Alice Cooper was the headliner of a late afternoon/evening show which featured a number of acts. My friends and I went just to see Johnny and Leslie West. We couldn’t care less about Alice Cooper.
Johnny stole the show.
Even the Cooper fan freaks were blown away.
It was my first ever rock concert.
Johhny spoke highly of Derringer in his biography.
He said Derringer was more than a great guitarist - he was also a great human being.
A guitarist (Rick Derringer) from my hometown of Dayton Ohio played in his band for a while.
He was the real McCoy.
If I’m not mistaken, Rick became a devouted Christian in the last few years.
I do not doubt that.
From the way she reacted when he walked on the stage, i think she was totally delighted and surprised by his “dropping in”.
Winter. It was a County Fair and he had either been cancelled or cancelled himself for some reason.
He would play a tune for a beer.
Nobody seemed to know who he was except me.
He looked bad. Really bad.
I thought she was great too.
Her band ‘Big Brother and the Holding Company’ was tight.
She died just about a year after I saw her perform.
The music Scene in Boston was amazing at the time. I used to frequent a very cool underground music venue where i saw all the great bands of the sixties, ironically named “The Tea Party” LOL!
2 years of heroin and 35 years of methadone.
