Footage shows allegedly drunk Pawhuska official

By Angela Hong

TULSA, Okla. —

Footage obtained by FOX23 shows the Pawhuska city manager telling a police officer not to arrest a man suspected of drunk driving -- the man is also the city attorney.

The footage has gone viral in the Osage County community and people there are upset.

The Pawhauska police officer was wearing a body camera and it recorded the exchange he had with the city manager. The footages shows the manager telling the officer to let City Attorney Jesse Worten sober up instead of arresting him right away.

On July 3, Worten was involved in an accident by his home on 18th and Leahy in Pawhuska. Worten crashed his car after allegedly driving drunk.

“He can’t walk -- he can’t walk," the voice of Cpl. William McDaniels with the Pawhuska Police Department is heard on the recording.

"Where is he?" asked City Manager Paul McAlexander.

"He’s in the front seat of my car. We had to spill him over in there. He is hammered. I mean beyond hammered,” McDaniels replied. “He’s not just had a few … I mean he’s hammered."

A report obtained by FOX23 said Worten told officers he was drunk. He appears to slur his words on the recording.

According to the report, because of who Worten was the Assistant Chief Brian Rumsey, who was also on the scene, tried calling his chief for guidance -- but Chief Scott Laird was on vacation. That's when Rumsey called McAlexander -- who then started giving the McDaniels directions.

“Do I write him a ticket? What do I do?” asked McDaniels on the recording.

“No. Not right now … we’ll take care of it on Monday. Right now, we’ll put him in a cell until he sobers up. Or until [his wife] shows up and gets him,” answered McAlexander on the recording.

Many people in Pawhuska have seen this video and feel Worten was given special treatment.

“If I went and done that, I would have been thrown in [jail]. Handcuffed all that,” said Clarence Brothers, a Pawhuska resident.

“If I got arrested if the city manager going to come save me too or any other person?”asked Cassandra Brownwolf, a Pawhuska resident.

The city’s new acting attorney did not want to comment.

The city manager did not return FOX23’s call. And Worten’s wife, who is also a city councilor, did not want to comment.

Worten was eventually arrested and given a municipal ticket, but hours after it was too late to take a Breathalyzer test. This means he won’t lose his license.

In the report, Laird said if he had been there, he would have placed Worten under arrest right away.

Ah, the Pawhuska night life!

Spent one night in Pawhuska, back in the late fifties when I was in college.

We went bowling! The first frame of my life. And also the only frame I ever bowled with manual pinsetters...

Small town Oklahoma police are known for corruption. I can’t imagine this surprised anyone. It’s just lucky there’s now video of it.

Thing is...the good attorney will get off.

Hopefully...the City Manager gets and Obstruction of Justice charge against him....

But prolly won't happen....P-Town is small.

On the other hand...the new Osage Tribe Chief is REALLY making waves!! He might be lucky to survive as Chief 3 months...for what I hear.

At the time, I was more at home in a pool hall or a snooker parlor than in a bowling alley.

I assume there was no shortage of pool halls in P-town...

Friend of mine's Grandfather had a pool hall in P-Town.....His Grandpa sounded like a great guy..as is my friend.

Yeah...back in my Yout..I spent too much time in some pool halls. Loved to play snooker....

Some Saturday afternoon's we'd play with a square of chalk in the middle of the table with a ball on top. You knock the ball down..it cost you a pitcher of beer.

Those were the days!!

Reminds me of when the attorney general of Virginia claimed he was run off the road by the ghost of Hank Williams in a Cadillac.

Situation normal, only this time it’s a drunk official instead of a drunk cowboy. Drunk cowboys that work for the Pioneer Woman’s ranch get bailed out with one phone call or at least they did back in the 70s.

Ok, ok...just outside Pawhuska....
Last time I watched, her husband and she were renovating an old, historic warehouse in Pawhuska as a store and some kind of deli....
Are you always this specific?

I also like the interaction that she has with her family. They all seem so nice. Is that the part that seems boring to you? I guess some of it wouldn’t be of interest to those who are watching for the cooking tips and recipes.

SNAFU...........?

I don't think Pie Woman had anything to do with anything in the 70's.....

That said...they tend to get "special" treatment though.......

Money brings that...no different then..no different now.

I will say this...Worten has said he was drunk and wrong.

The City Manager needs to be arrested...IMO.

Is 25 some odd miles "just outside" in your world?

I know where they live...and have met them.

The building they've refurbed isn't nor was a warehouse...( Yeah...I like to be accurate...)

Best case I've heard is office's...above..and maybe a dinner / cafe restaurant below......

I dunno...I don't ask.

Agreed - the AM was referring to “other” places with that name which is unlikely since it is very specific to the area and the tribe. I think the AM’s comment was intended as somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as was my follow-up.

I didn’t take your comment personally since it’s easy to overlook meanings when words are in print rather than spoken in person.

Actually, I like that part too...except while she seems to really appreciate her husband’s butt in jeans, not a lot of touchy freely between the two.
I was referring to the food as being some what good but sometimes boring.
Just every now and then she cooks something that seems pretty pedestrian.
My opinion, FRiend...if you love it all, good for you!

Well, Osage, we live in a country that’s around 3000 miles wide (give or take a few hundred - specific enough for you?) so I’d say 25 miles near a town is pretty close by...what do you think their address says? Pawhuska or East Jepeepee, OK?
Wonderful you have met them...great.
So it’s technically NOT a warehouse...looked like one to me on TV.
And for someone who is SO specific, you don’t ask? Really? Wow....
