Madness in (Univ of Wisc) Madison (Grade Quotas)

Many American colleges and universities are in the thrall of “diversity,” but none more so than my institution, the University of Wisconsin. This spring, the university adopted a new plan that, according to Board of Regents policy, “[p]laces the mission of diversity at the center of institutional life so that it becomes a core organizing principle.”

.........................................................

It calls for “proportional participation of historically underrepresented racial-ethnic groups at all levels of an institution, including high status special programs, high-demand majors, and in the distribution of grades.”

We already are probably 90% to the point where due to grade inflation GPA is meaningless but U-W wants to go 100%. I guess that means if you are an Asian you will have to work ten times harder than an "underrepresented racial-ethnic group" to get a 4.0.

“...distribution of grades.”

That says it all.

The University of Wisconsin must believe blacks are inferior. They don’t believe blacks can compete against whites and Asians.

Giving blacks (or any race) more than they deserve is sort of like a welfare education.

I know a Wisconsin alum to went on to take some classes at our local community college.

He said community had better instructors, and he actually learned more.

We are reverting to the philosophy of the John Lennon song about imagining a world where everyone lives in perfect harmony with nature and each other “No war, no government, and no religion too”.

I have the fortune/misfortune of dealing with these young people. There are a number of things that concern me. For instance

Do you know college graduates can not read a clock with hands on it? Do you know that most of their hand writing is completely illegible? They don't know how to spell. They can not or will not make use of paragraphs. There seems to be little if any capitalization. They can't carry on a conversation in a traditional business and adult type environment. They use vulgarity liberally and inappropriately. They don't have a clue as to what business casual attire is.

I sit in the lobby of a major corporation. I sign these young people in for interviews and these are my observations. Of course their are exceptions to the rules. It does seem that these kids are very coarse. Also very immature. They come to job interviews in clothes I might have worn for Halloween back in the day! I am scared!

As other have pointed out we are getting closer and closer to Harrison Bergeron.

” including high status special programs,”

So, UW-M will have 90% white football and basketball teams?

UW-Madison, my good ol’ alma mater, has a gorgeous campus right on a magnificent lake, and several good/excellent academic departments; however, it has, for many decades now, been a home-away-from-home to endless elements of the Lunatic Fringe of the Far Left - in administration, professoriate, and student body, all.

I experienced the same thing some forty years ago. I attended my local junior college for the first two years and then transferred to Michigan State. JC taught English Comp (2 years) and MSU taught freshman the worthless ATL (American Thought and Language) which was nothing more than nascent minority group studies that are so prevalent today. I actually learned how to compose a paper and I learned writing styles. I often wish I still had my “Modern Rhetoric” textbook to refer to from my freshman year. I’ve even tried to track it down on-line with no luck.

Basically it is full admission that “The Bell Curve “had it right. Its also undeniable evidence that “diversity “ is just a way to defeat bans on quotas and affirmative action.

As a senior in high school (1972-3), my teacher used a text called “Concise Rhetoric” to get us ready for freshman composition in college. As a result, I was not surprised by the expectation that we be able to write competently, using thesis statements and organized paragraphs. I cannot say the same for a majority of those in my freshman composition class. At one time, I had a copy of “Concise Rhetoric” when my old high school retired the book. Like you with “Modern Rhetoric”, I think it probably exceeds any text used today.

It won’t be long you’ll have to to meet diversity requirements.

The mask has come off. Academe is no longer meritocratic. Next you'll have to belong to the " Party" to get in.

Also reduces the value of the education....thus grounds for litigation against such institutions.

Elitist liberals ruin pretty much everything they touch. They’ve ruined education in this nation.

The real disservice is to those minorities that actually EARN their GPA.

Any future employer looking at their academic achievement will automatically assume that it was inflated.

Absolutely correct.

The future Booker T. Washingtons, Thomas Sowells, Dr. Ben Carsons, and Clarence Thomas’ of the world will be viewed by many as having something given to them.
