I think he got the foreign student scholarship because he had a foreign parent, lied, and no one looked closely-it is/always was easy to do. I went to college-and waited tables at the same club with-a girl whose mother was American and married a Mexican who worked for an American company. She was born in Harlingen, but lied and got a foreign student scholarship, which frosted me. But when her parents found out, they put a stop to it-too bad O’s mom or grandparents didn’t do the same...

You are likely right about her parents not being so thrilled about their daughter’s relationship, but it probably had as much to do with the rumor that he was still married in his home country and didn’t have an American divorce, making her a party to bigamy by default, and her child illegitimate.
