Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has agreed to briefly live on the equivalent of a minimum-wage salary as he rallies support for a ballot measure. On Sunday, Quinn and other Democrats spoke at a campaign event in Chicago about the non-binding measure on the November 4 ballot. It asked if the minimum wage should be raised from $8.25 /hour to $10 /hour. One congress woman, who's lived on minimum wage, asked the Governor if he could do the same, and he answered yes.

I’d say all politicians should have to live on minimum wage, but that would just lead to them raising it faster.

They cheat, they continue to live in their nice homes and pretend they are living on minimum wage by limiting their grocery money. When I see them try to live in a motel without their cable, unlimited phone service, unlimited fuel and government provided cars I’ll be impressed. Having said that I’m not for increasing the minimum wage, I’m just fed up with liberal solidarity side shows.

Pretty easy to live on minimum wage if you have the Governor’s Mansion and the state provides your transportation.

The thing is, we’re talking about two percent of the full-time workforce. That’s who this will make a positive difference for. That’s it.

The part-timers are going to suffer when it goes up. They’re already not getting the hours at the current rate and businesses who are reluctant to pay them more are just going to cut back in other areas.

This argument for an increase in the MW would’ve had more impact before Obamacare. Part-time workers routinely worked 32-38 hours a week to keep them under the FT threshold. Now they’ve been cut to under 28. Many, MANY businesses took it to a standard 22-24.

That has hurt MW workers much more than a the actual wage itself.

We’ve got a serious under-employment problem.

I get so angry when I read articles debating if we’re in a recession or not. People are suffering terribly right now. My kids’ entire generation is so screwed. The fact that they cannot admit that FACT and STILL see more gov’t interference as the solution to the problem that they won’t even acknowledge... grrr!

Must be that the minimum wage is a living wage!

The whole minimum wage is a scam. As you point out, only a small percentage of the total work force actually makes only the minimum wage.

But the real sting is that most union contracts are pegged to the minimum wage. If the minimum wage goes up, then usually the union wage scale is increased across the board by an equivalent amount. So this is the real whack on employers and why Democrats push the minimum wage to make their union bosses happy.

This depends a lot on his definition of “live on”. He no doubt has plenty of assets to fall back on, so he can receive a *salary* of no more than the minimum wage. However, I seriously doubt if he could continue to support himself if he were explicitly restricted to a *budget* based on a minimum-wage income.

Simple fact, increasing the minimum wage harms more people than it benefits. Increased minimum wage benefits union workers whose pay is tied to the minimum wage and thereby the unions themselves. Increased minimum wage benefits the government by increasing tax revenue. Increased minimum wage harms the worker, employers can raise prices only so much before customers are driven away, remember not everyone sees an increase in wages think of all the people who just had their lifestyle decreased by increased costs. Increased minimum wage harms the worker by forcing increased workload on fewer employees, remember prices can only be increased so much, this also will drive marginal employees out of the job market. You can try and dispute this but I have 25 years experience with minimum wage increases on the employer side.

Is he going to move out of where he lives into a two-bedroom apartment with four roommates, or a trailer?

It’s foolish to play their game, thereby acknowledging that the minimum wage should be a living wage.

Gov. Pat Quinn is a putz. It is impossible for any Donkey to live on a budget, let alone one based on minimum wage (and less if taxes are taken out). The solution for the Donkey politician is to tax something to give themselves or their “victims” raises.

Wrong argument, accepting a faulty premise.

The minimum wage was never intended to be “lived on”.
