Word For The Day, Thursday, July 31, 2014 – celerity

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

celerity \suh-LAIR-uh-tee\ noun
rapidity of motion or action : swiftness

Example sentences:
Monica was impressed by the ease and celerity with which the new waiter she had hired could wipe down and set up a table.

"The Common Core entered public discourse suddenly this year, due in large part to the celerity with which the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation financed and coordinated its implementation in 2010."
— Micah Meadowcroft, The American Spectator, June 9, 2014

Etymology:
In the novel Of Human Bondage, W. Somerset Maugham tells of an undertaker's shop that used the words "Economy, Celerity, Propriety" as part of a window display involving "silver lettering on a black cloth" and "two model coffins." But "celerity" isn't dead in English writing, where it has proven its vitality since the Middle Ages. Shakespeare used it in Henry V when the chorus recited, "Thus with imagin'd wing our swift scene flies, / In motion of no less celerity / Than that of thought." Benjamin Franklin used it as a synonym of "velocity." And the speedy term (which can be traced back to "celer," a Latin word meaning "swift") is still keeping pace today.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

What makes a leftist, cocaine-infused celerity think that anyone gives a damn about his opinions?

Obama believes that celerity in executive action trumps the founding of our nation. In reality, our Framers knew that lengthy debate and inaction led to more thoughtful legislation, something we haven’t had in decades.

A for you. In their haste to push through a bill, they neglect that essential fact to put another notch on their post.

Barack’s gift—he can mimic sincerity
His election destroyed our prosperity
I couldn’t be wronger
Thought it would take longer
But the socialists act with celerity

The celerity at which the Leftist-Socialist cabal will hurl the charge of racism is stunning at times.

With the advent of Twitter, the celerity with which the left blindly charges racism has increased tenfold, particularly when a white conservative like John Podhoretz dares to send even the most generic and non-racial, albeit critical, tweet to a minority.

Naturally, the irony about this is lost on the left, both with regard to who is actually being racist by selectively sheltering minorities from criticism, and who is more effectively making a serious effort to get someone with whom they disagree to “shut up”.
