I am inclined to agree. I think they are wild animals, and should be euthanized. There are a million videos of adorable lions, tigers, bears, chimps, gorillas, etc., snuggling and hugging people. So what? They are wild animals, not pets.

IIRC, Pit Bulls were bred to fight bears in pits, hence the name.

I recently talked with a lady who had been an animal control officer and had run no kill shelters. We discussed the pit bull and she told that a specialized breeding program was done in Cuba during the Batista time. The pits were crossed with another breed whose name I can not remember and the result was a pit that would track down and kill escaped prisoners. She said it was cheaper than a bullet. She told me that if you track the lineage of any pit involved in a human attack you will find that Cuban strain somewhere.

I helped train dogs years ago and have had limited contact with pits but the ones I met well mannered and never a problem. I read somewhere that in England they were known as the Nanny Dog, owners would tie them to the baby stroller and leave for a walk thru the park knowing their child was safe.

I'm all in favor of regulating the American Bully and the American Pit Bull Terrier. I consider those to be upper-case Pit Bulls. I'd also regulate Wolf hybrids, Cane Corsos, and Presa Canarios.

When you say ban all lower-case 'pit bulls,' as used by the media, dangerous dog regulations, and dog bite statistics, you're including the Staffordshire Terrier (maxing out at 35 pounds), the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Bull Terrier, the Toy Bull Terrier, the Bull Mastiff, and several other breeds that I don't believe are the problem (well, some American Staffordshire Terriers may be involved).

I'd attribute the overwhelming majority of pitbull dog bite deaths to American Pit Bull Terriers and American Bullies, and mixes of other breeds with either of those two breeds.

I think the Rottweiler is more dangerous than any of the other breeds (over 10% of fatalities annually), based on deaths by breed, as are sled dogs, Akitas, and even (sadly) German Shepherds (about 4% of dog bite deaths annually).

There's no way that Bull Terriers are responsible for 4% of dog bite deaths annually, yet it's a lower case pitbull.
