One reason the attack from the south went well was that Germany had pulled its crack Das Reich panzer division to the north to assist in the Normandy defense, leaving the rest of France under defended. The allies must have known this and chosen to exploit the opening...

The initial planning for the invasion of southern France predated the destruction of the channel ports,

While Churchill did opposed the invasion, when he was unable to stop it he milked it for political gain to the greatest possible extent.
