In the early 80s I had a room mate. His girl friend had just graduated from college and came to stay with us for a week before she left to spend several months in Paris. She took two showers a day: once in the morning and once after her afternoon workout. Nothing unusual, nothing noticed. About a month after she left for France, she told my room mate that her landlord threatened to raise her rent, because “she took two showers a day, rather than once a week ‘like civilized people’.”
I waited in a market while a Mexican man filled a bag with doughnuts/sweet rolls. After he walked away I went to the spot in which he stood to fill a bag and was assaulted by his spoor that still lingered acridly in the air.
